I recently came across a Trending Topic on LinkedIn, concerning "Unlimited Paid Vacation" being the best policy when it comes to giving vacation to employees. What are your opinions on this? Do you think a policy such as this would make employees more productive during their working hours, or do you think a company would fall apart?
Things would be worse. I get 20 per year and take 15 + burn what Iām forced to burn. But if I had unlimited Iād maybe take two weeks and make sure that I wasnāt necessary to the team at that time.
That's along the lines of what I was thinking most people would do. I would assume that taking too much time off when you're needed would eventually lead to an employee losing their job. Figuring out when that point is reached would be hell on HR.

Unlimited PTO just means they don't have to pay out vacation when you leave š (seriously, this is the real reason most companies do it)
This. Unlimited PTO has a nice ring to it but some people would rather get paid out for it. šæ
I absolutely despise unlimited. It leads to specual treatment were people who worked there longer geta more pto dates. Managers have to approve pto dates and i have gotten denied because someone else takes the dates with seniority
Most often it's worse because rather than a bucket that you feel like you can and should use, you get an ephemeral "take it when you need it, but don't actually use it you lazy shit" sort of thing going on.
Itās complete bullshit. Itās really an accounting trick. When thereās real PTO, companies have to pay out those days in cash should you leave. They have to keep that cash on hand for all employees. Switching to āunlimitedā means they donāt have to keep that cash locked up, makes the books look better. In practice, you get maybe 3-4 weeks and your boss will typically not allow you to take a vacation when you want to.
Boss controlling vacation sucks big time
Iāve worked at multiple companies but yes they do kinda guilt trip you but idgaf. Just make sure to book lots and lots of small trips. It is nice if you travel a lot or have family outside. Iāve worked at two companies w/ unlimited and itās never been that big of an issue I think I averaged 35 days off a year because I like to travel. Depends on your manager but Iāve always had it so you just enter the days in the calendar and let my manager know a couple weeks in advanced. I work at a corporate place w/ 20 days and would still pick unlimited any time.
If itās real unlimited PTO then itās awesome. Not sure about other companies but Indeed unlimited PTO is legit. 35 days last year.
Unlimited PTO is great, but it's true it's gotta be timely or you're an asshole.
Itās useless if your manager doesnāt approve your PTO (even for a short duration like 3-4 days) when unlimited PTO.
I'm curious how often a manager might deny time off with "Unlimited" PTO.
Iāve never been denied. My experience w/ unlimited pto was amazing at multiple companies.
If your manager doesn't approve, you need a better boss.
