Unreal

I walked into work at a small startup today at 8.
An hour later, during my 1:1, I was laid off.

So unreal. Never expected it! I don’t think I am still in shock but my intellect tells me I must be, 1 hour is just too fast to process it.

I refuse to let this derail me or let my mind spend any time feeling miserable. I have my health and great experience as a woman working in tech, a cs degree, I am so lucky.

I am going to start my job search this weekend.

Two questions:
1. Have you been laid off before? What should I expect mentally? I have suffered from idepression before so I am worried about that a little.

2. Any referrals to healthy tech companies anywhere in the US would be welcome. I will have my resume updated and ready by tonight.

PM, 14 years of experience, $230K

It's always a blessing in disguise! I have been there and I was on visa- trying to find a job and file visa within 60 days was scary for me. It was like a full-time job in itself, but it all worked out. Got 3 competitive offers. Just think positive and get support from friends and family. You will land a better job for sure. Good luck!

I got laid off making ~35k working for girlfriends dads company (super awkward).

Six months later I moved back home and took a job ~60k.

Two years later I joined Microsoft TC ~130k.

Worth it? Yes! So I agree with others probably a blessing in disguise!

That’s a great turnaround! I like the 2x TC situation. Did the relationship survive the lay off?

No, unfortunately but I found a better one (my wife), so sometimes it’s addition by subtraction

      That's great.
      best of luck.

With 14 years exp. I am sure u won't have trouble getting interviews.

It's also not a bad time to take a break if that's something u might be inclined to do.
A wild idea: take 3 months off and go travel 😀

Hopefully with that salary you have some savings to help until the next gig.

Don’t let depression sink in. Like you said, it was the lack of funding and not your fault.

Yes, but not enough to cover a whole year of expenses... which I hear is how long it takes some people to find jobs. Thank you for the kind words.

It’s a startup. When dealing with those kinds of companies is best to assume just like if you invest money in them that one day, out of nowhere this will happen. Can’t treat startups like a regular job.

After working there for 4 years, you get lulled into a false sense of security. But yes, this is why I don’t want to work at a startup again. At least not one where I am not the founder or cofounder

4 years. Since they are a startup and their latest round wasn’t successful (just found that out today), there is no severance. There is however a $350 monthly unemployment check from the state if I apply for it.

I got laid off three years ago from UX dev position, then went to Spain for three months. Best time of my life.

Now I’m working on a tech for biotech startup and making a ton of progress, and it’s nothing close to what I could have imagined I’d ever be doing.

You can live on that much money for a long time. Do something creative with it, if you’re able to!

Travel doesn’t do it for me anymore, I already did the travel thing in 2012 after leaving a company I worked for for 6 years. I traveled for 9 months so I totally understand the sentiment... if money wasn’t an issue (I have to support 4 other people) and I could find an SWE cofounder, I would most likely work on a quantified-self idea that I have been dabbling with for the past year.
