Unusual experience when interviewing at Twitch.

I recently went through the paces of the interview process with Twitch. Did two initial phone calls and then an on-site. I passed all with flying colors, and genuinely thought things were moving in a positive direction. The team I'd be working with was really down to earth and we all vibed well. I was told they would have an answer for me last Friday. Last Friday came and they told me they would need a till Monday to decide as they were waiting on feedback from one more person. I said ok, I understand. Not really that big of a deal to wait a few more days. Well today I get a call from a Twitch recruiter explaining that there is a headcount issue regarding the position and they are no longer hiring for it. I was reassured that this has nothing to do with me as a candidate and is completely their fault. And that if they hire for the position again I will be the first person they call. Has anyone experience anything like this? Is the recruiter just letting me down gently or do you think he is telling the truth? TLDR: Passed all interviews for a position they are saying doesn't even exist.

The other candidate got the offer

I was texting the recruiter after he called, to press him on this very point, this is a quote from him. "We are not filling this role with anyone else. This is the truth." Maybe I'm to naive and just want to believe him. But I understand he could be lying. I just don't understand why.. Plenty of recruiters have given me the ole we went with another candidate talk. Why would this one need to come up with an elaborate don't hire this guy story.

They liked you enough to want to keep you warm in case something else opens up. Just that they liked the other candidate better for this role. Nobody wants to hear they were the second choice.

Happened to me at Spotify. I had interviewed and had gotten positive feedback but last minute they said there was a change in headcount.

So strange, I have never experienced anything like this. Does bring me a bit of comfort to know it is something that can happen.

Manager could have moved and they froze his/her open reqs. It sucks but things happen. Sorry for your bad experience.

May be an internal transfer

They’re being honest. I could see how headcount changes and they definitely would’ve said if they went with another candidate if they did.

I always ask why/feedback, but I’ve only received it once. Thanks for providing it when asked, I wish more ppl did. My SWE friend says he always gets feedback. Maybe in PM roles it’s less common?

They have no reason to lie. HC reqs change all the time. Is the company small? If it's a big one then they should try to find another req to hire you for-- they've already spent a lot of money interviewing you

This is not some consulting company. There are headcount and budget changes all the time. What do you think is happening?
