I'm now in Seattle, but I grew up in Vancouver, went through elementary to University. As time went on, the quality of the immigrants really went down. And I say that as a Chinese immigrant to Vancouver myself. Traffic is horrible, people are driving recklessly in their expensive cars their mommy and daddies bought them from the other side of the world. Chinese exchange students flock to Asian supermarkets and have zero intention of immersing themselves into other cultures, trying out other foods, speaking English in public places, etc. I look Chinese so I'm expected to speak Chinese and not English. Home prices have reached unlivable and there's no shortage of blame to Chinese people. If your car is scraped while it's parked, your chances of getting a note with contact information is zero. I know chance of that happening anywhere is usually low, but in Vancouver, it's a big fat zero. Go to restaurants in Richmond and you'll need cash, no card is accepted. Tax evasion just seems normal. Go to the checkout line at the supermarket and the customer in front of you will likely leave their empty cart blocking your way because zero fu-ks are given once they unload everything from their cart. I once reminded a lady that her cart is still in front of me and she shrugged, "I don't need it anymore" in Chinese. The cashier quickly moved it out of the way to make sure no sh-t went down. And the cashier apologized to me for it... Its truly sad to see sh*tty people f-ck up a great city. There, rant over. I know Seattle has its problems too but I just don't see it as bad as Vancouver.
You want other people to live the way you live, but no one is expected to do so, isn’t that right?
Basic human decency shouldn't be a preference. Not to mention if you immigrated all the way to the other side of the world to live life exactly like you did in Asia, then why even bother?
Vancouver got the worst of China. Let's be clear that it's not Chinese people who are the problem, it's THESE Chinese. They are the children of the rich in China, their parents own factories back in China and sent their kids overseas. Bought up multiple houses in Vancouver and installed their one child in one of them. Easy immigration to Canada and the West coast is closest to home made it THE destination for China's rich to park their money (in real estate) and kids. These are people who don't bother with school because they don't expect to have to work, mommy will hand them everything they need. Or if they do it's just to check boxes off while they wait for the family business to be handed to them. They see you as their servant. Go to Toronto and while there are still plenty of assholes who are Chinese there are also a lot more regular Chinese folks who go to school and get jobs and work hard for what the have, and as a result have a decent amount of respect for others.
If people think Hollywood celebrity college scandal is huge, they have nothing on foreign students - rich levels of legal tuition. Many foreign students go to private schools in rich parts of top cities like at Cal Arts in SF or USC to be able to claim just that.
All that education and you are yet to learn about paragraph and spacing!
Nice stereotype OP, you contribute your part to the same $hithole you’re describing.
^ spoiled international Chinese student detected
I went there for a weekend and I saw 4 ferrari’s in one day... never seen one in Seattle. Then we went to Gyu Kaku, there was 8 chinese kids all on line playing League on their phone.. every single one of them was holding a gigantic LV shopping bag. Never going back there again 😂
Did they bother you? Or were they a nuisance to everyone else in the restaurant? Just curious. I can understand why the OP feel frustrated. But what you said - I don’t want to think that you feel inferior, hence you never want to go back there again. So it must be something else. Did one of those Ferraris tail end your car, or did one of those LV kids misbehave?
I see tons of ridiculous Ferraris, McClarens, Alpha Romeos, etc around here - Eastside, not Seattle proper
Same as all over bay area
Typical problem where a developed region expects investment or labor from another not so developed region, but does not want the people moving in to bring their culture and habits. Hard to just conclude that the immigrants are wrong. In other words, if you are allowing immigrants other than as refugees, why do you have rights to expect them to assimilate in your culture ??
The Chinese aren't assimilating to Canada because, they are Colonizing Canada.
I question the requirement of assimilation. It is not in the law and also doesn’t seem like a moral obligation. I am immigrating to Canada on my money and I will be legally correct there, why assimilation is a necessity? and if you don’t like your country welcoming ppl who don’t assimilate, ask them to change the immigration laws
I was shocked when I took my first trip to Canada. All of the government installations such as the border were all well kept and brand new while downtown Vancouver was a wasteland. I thought my hotel was in a slum until I realized that, no, I was actually in the most expensive part of town!!!!!!!! There were homeless junkies and mental patients everywhere. It smelled like weed in the city. Ever corner was filled with homelessness (I'm not exaggerating at all). I noticed the rich Chinese (thanks to Trudeau) they had new cars new Tesla's(America First). It was just the most bizarre experience I've had in a long while. It was very very dirty. The indigenous population seemed disillusioned and generally stressed. Whites are becoming a minority in their own country. Very interesting site. Thank God for Trump. I say that as a proud black man.
Maybe the Chinese immigrants will start avoiding Canada after this whole Huawei business. Given my rent prices, I wouldn't necessarily be opposed...
> I look Chinese so I'm expected to speak Chinese and not English. This happens in the Bay. When I was at FB I had someone message me in Mandarin just because I had a Chinese sounding name. Expect it to happen in Seattle eventually.
I wouldnt get my Hope's up so much.... trump is really doing a number on the China...under trump, Chinas ability to purchase American land (as they've been doing) got much more difficult because of his tax overhaul combined with him undercutting China with the tariffs. Chinas ability to lend (invest in land) is waning very quickly as we enter into a tech cold war with them. During Obama's days, China had ideal conditions to make a full scale impact in Seattle as they are doing in Vancouver but, trump was their only (and frankly biggest and important) miscalculation. China doesnt really have ideal conditions anymore. Their central bank is now entering into -0.4% lending rates in an effort to stoke their economy which keeps decreasing its expansion year after year. It's been sliding ever since trump got elected. China is in deep water. Trudeau sold his country out to China which is why Vancouver is practically being colonized by China. Trudeau is under investigation right now for corruption (he sold his country out). Trump's new trade deal is the only thing that stands in chinas way for total domination of both Canada and Mexico.
Vancouver is not "practically being colonized by China".
