Very Large Family (5 kids) at FAANG+?

Do you work at a FAANG+ and have a large family? How do you do it? Considering opportunity for great position at hq of a big company - in a major US city. I’m concerned safe, adequate housing for family of 7 means I will have a two-hour commute, or cramped living ... is that just life in a big city?

I have 2 and am already exhausted (time/money/mentality). How do you handle 5?!

Current company has amazing work life balance but very flat pay-wise. We make do, but not much future prep- that’s why I’m looking for something more.

Heavily heavily depends on which major US city, how much they will pay you, and how much commute you can put up with. For instance if the job is in NYC there are plenty of neighborhoods in NJ where a SWE at FAANG will be able to afford a house large enough to accommodate the family. Especially a senior swe. But about an hour commute. In the bay area, you'd be really hard pressed to find a comfortable house on a swe salary. Not sure about Seattle

What is FAANG?

I have six kids and my husband for a total of eight we lived in Redmond and currently in Bellevue you can find the house but you got to pay the price. There are a few options on the outskirts that don’t have you to far from the city it’s doable in my opinion

Facebook/Apple/Amazon/Netflix/Google+ means others (like Microsoft). Thanks! For sharing your experience!

Current TC and desired future TC?

$128K currently - pretty flat (low single digit annual raises for top performers), but relatively low cost of living area. I’d like TC $250k+ (Base ~$200, perf bonuses and RSUs beyond?).

What metros?

It’s possible but you won’t live in a very prestigious district and school ratings won’t be stellar. But it’s possible and unless you go into a really low cost area, public schools are decent. Being in places like Silicon Valley will expose your kids to future in tech which is not a bad thing. Their friends will be 1/2 programmers and your kids future will be set. Geography matters.

Go for it and don’t think too much. It will work out.
