I’ve seen SWE roles advertised but the job specs make it sound more like tools automation, release pipeline development, chaos engineering etc. I completely understand why they would advertise for SWE rather than DevOps for this role as 95% of DevOps engineers were calling themselves SysAdmins 5 years ago. But what is the view on these roles from an app dev SWE perspective at FANG? Is it easy to transition to app dev in the future? Culture wise, do dev teams generally handle their own deployments or do they ‘chuck it over the fence’ like at most non-FANG orgs, so DevOps just get stuck doing releases? How does TC compare?
TC?
DevOps is not a role or job title
DevOps is a culture

For G: Google has SWE-SRE and SE-SRE. SWE-SRE is a SWE role and is seen as a project change. Amount of dev work depends on team, some are doing heavy infrastructure work, some in the middle and some ops. TC for SRE is on average higher.
Thanks mate, very helpful. I’ve heard SRE is well respected in Google so makes sense it comes through in TC too
Around Half of SREs here SWEs so yes SRE is well regarded at Google.
