I am considering an AWS PM role in Palo Alto. AWS is probably my top choice but concerned the commute will kill me (there’s a shuttle from SF, but it’s still 90 min). I’m wondering if any PMs ever work from the SF office occasionally. Or generally, how much flexibility there is on WFH or different office. Thanks!
Work from home work from space work from toilet
You can absolutely work from home in the evenings and weekends. Everyone does that
So generous
As an Amazon pm I occasionally work from home 2 days a month on average. I leave early 2 or 3 times a week and work the rest of the day from home. I think it is difficult for PMs to be effective while spending a significant portion of time remotely. PM roles are all about meeting with people to understand requirements and gain consensus. Nothing beats in person meetings for that kind of interaction.
Thanks that makes sense. My role will be fairly customer focused, so actually much more concentrated in SF proper, as are BD / Solutions folks who work out of AWS SF office... so it would be completely rational for the role/output; was just curious if Amazon has a “face time” culture
Yes we have a FaceTime culture, but as we hire more and more from tech companies with WFH policies I am seeing some changes. PM roles tend to be in office even if you are supporting Partner’s as you are the internal arm to the team.
Dude you can't be a remote pm. Isn't going to work out. Can you work remotely once you get home or occasionally? Absolutely! But if you can't/won't go to the office to be face to face with the stakeholders & engineers, find a different role.
Agreed. I was thinking in terms of 1 day / week. Having thinking / uninterrupted time is important for PMs too.
My PM works from home probably 6x/Mo, and recently got a principal promo.
I'm a TAM out of east Palo Alto and I pretty much never go to the office. Maybe you can just go in for a few hours and finish at home to avoid rush hour.
What is TAM
I have a coworker who is a project manager and she works from home like 2-3/week, just got promoted. I think it really only depends on how your manager feels about it. Some care, some don't.
Wtf aws pm wfh?
