WFH no more

I just signed with Apple to move from LA to Cupertino. I am currently working from home but shitty manager is forcing me to leave.

So now my TC went up by 25% but I’m freaking out and having panic attacks. Have not worked in an office for 5 years now and am so used to wfh lifestyle.

Can someone please help calm my mind down and assure me Apple will be great? I’ll be joining the is&s org.

Also my wife and kids won’t move up north initially — and could take months and months, all the meanwhile I’ll be living alone. Ohhh god what have I done!!

Any and all support is truly welcome 🙏

Thanks a bunch, blinders.

Living alone means going into the office is a good move, you'll meet new people and get integrated into the area faster. WFH in an empty house drains your sanity.

How did I end up a part of this mentally weak generation? I guess it wouldn’t be so bad, except I’m allergic to all the “emotional support” dogs people take everywhere.

I was overseas for over a year during my military career from my family. You gotta do what's best for the long run. You will be fine. You can contact via Skype/phone and have work to keep your mind right. Exercise, go out with coworkers, explore the new area etc.

First, let me shake your hand for your military service and say thank you :)

And second thanks for the solid advice. Getting into Apple (and in a good org) is s good strategic move. Like you said, one must sacrifice for the long term gain.

You sound like a solid dude, so you live in the Bay Area?

I will! Keep your head up and concentrate on work and family. Have and set goals but always be ready to adapt/change only for the betterment of yourself and family. Be confident and professional. Ignore the BS and remember you have to power to let things affect your life, no one else. If you want to be happy and let it go,guess what, you can.

Wfh is terrible. Now you get to spend all day with friends and other humans. It'll be great and the anxiety will end on day one.

I did WFH for a company for 3 years, and have been with amazon (in the office) for the last 2 years. I’ve missed WFH and wanted it back the whole time. ~20% loss in productivity for me moving to an office. Luckily I’m about to switch to being remote at Amazon (is moving to a new city, and I’m valued enough on my team that I can work remote now)

I do find productivity is lower but my happiness is happier going to office. People waste a lot of time chatting, moving from building to building, having lunch, having coffee, bathroom breaks, etc

absolute worst case scenario is you hate the new job and move your family to a new spot for nothing. but you would have felt trapped if you stayed with the bad manager, so do you really have anything to lose? if you hate apple you can find something new with higher TC than before since you got a bump and apple and salesforce are great companies. plus if you feel a need to wfh full time you can tell hiring managers you have experience wfh and won’t be a loaf. should try to keep the relationship with the salesforce manager for a reference though

Both are Eddy’s org. IS&S is the “new” services side of things. iS&T is the ugly step child everyone seems to know about. There’s change a foot in iS&T. Services is doing fine, still got politics but at least they get shit done.

Calm down. You have to work with people at Apple. It’s a functional org. Can’t avoid it. You will likely still be able to WFH ad hoc when needed, but Apple isn’t fond of this mode. They need butts in seats and collaborating in office. Even dialing into a meeting is not a trivial thing.

Cheap shuttle flights down to LA on the weekends. You’ll be fine until your family moves up. I’d advise renting out your LA property rather than selling just in case. Actually, it’s better all around. Housing here is crazy. Best to subsidize your rent with rents income from LA until you can afford to buy.
