Hey All I keep hearing all the wlb horror stories at amazon. Is this role specific? Or its equally bad in all functions like PRoduct management, program management and engineering? TC 190k Yoe 7 years
It's role specific
So I am guessing engineering is the toughest place to be
10-6 plus some extra hours after you go back home.
Org/group/role specific. Also there are different flavors of bad WLB. There’s “I might get called at 3AM” bad, and “I have to deliver the moon in only 3 weeks” bad
Yeah that makes sense
Many mature orgs within AWS actually have good WLB. It's the relatively new and upcoming ones that need to get out there and gain market that are particularly bad. Think AI, Lambda, other application services.
Thanks appreciate the input
For any large company the answer will of course be "it depends", but I would say on average the WLB for engineers at Amazon is much worse than other places. My own experience: at least 50 hours a week to keep your head above water. Lots of crunch time and random org wide diktats which have to be addressed immediately. In my time here we have never had a sprint that didn't have a massive amount of items roll over due to all the randomisation and unforeseen difficulties

There was a guy sharing a sob story last week(?) that he was working at Amazon for two years and didn’t do anything, made ~$110 TC I think I recall, and felt like he deserved to be fired but never was... so... guess it must be role specific 😆🤷♂️
