WTF did Apple expect would happen to iPhone demand?

Remember when iPhones used to start at $649 and we're considered high end? WTF did Cook and Co. expected would happen to demand as they pushed iPhone prices higher and higher, bringing them in line with high end laptop prices? Do they even model price elasticity and shit at Apple or do they just pick a number that's $100 higher every year compared to the previous year?

AAPL brought the bear upon themselves.

Probably all their pricing decisions are made by people living near their headquarters alone.

They're probably trying to push people toward payment plans... Everything has to be a monthly fee these days

The issues are saturation of penetration, and saturation of technology.

First, there are fewer new markets to expand into. iPhones are readily available on all channels (carriers, retail stores, authorized sellers) in nearly every country where people want to buy one.

Second, old phones are good enough - Apple has decided to make iOS 12 updates available to the iPhone 5S (from 2013!).

This also has the effect that even Apple employees are using older phones (issued by the company), because corporate has decided that it’s good enough.

Ya it’s pretty bad. I have been a loyal iPhone user for years and have been upgrading once every 1-2 years but now I think I will just sit tight and keep this one until it dies, badly. I also think they are making phones for the 17-21 year old group. I am in my 40s and don’t care about the camera being better than my iPhone 7 and the phone is fast enough so I don’t care about the newest chip. I am traveling and in meetings all day. I need an iPhone with a battery that lasts 16 hours!!!!! I need better hands free functionality. I need a regular headphone jack again. I need a phone that stays on the LTE phone network and consistently has 4 bars!!!!!

Revenue and profit will continue to soar.. number of devices sold is irrelevant

That works in the luxury market. Not with smartphones which have become commoditized.

This could be true for a devices company. Not one that expects to see growth form services though.

Yes if Porsche wanted to keep its #1 market cap while transitioning into other products and makings the majority of its revenue from services.

Spoken like your Lufthansa friend, who like you doesn't understand basic economics, customer segmentation and targeting, and the markets that Apple plays in.

Their prices are ridiculous, even with the employee discounts we get. Innovation has slowed down too unfortunately.

Everyone and their mother and children in Bay Area were swearing by their iPhone for the past several years. Rents were doubled because Apple was building a spaceship. They would say Apple has as much cash as small countries, so nothing can happen to them. They were right.

Consider the performance of the new iPhones are on par with the latest MacBook Pro, why shouldn’t they be on the same price range?

Do they care if they make 2x profit on half as many iPhones? Same net profit at the end of the day

I have to agree to this statement, Apple is pushing prices way too high and too fast. It will slow migration to IOS and once people go to one OS it becomes harder to switch due to convenience

Yeah especially when the economy slows down. You think people are gonna spend $1000 on a phone when they are worried about their job? Lol no
