Wal-mart (ISD) vs Walmart.com (GEC)

This is a rant post you have been warned.

For the people that did not know Walmart has two main IT teams one is Walmart.com (GEC in California) and the other is Wal-Mart (ISD in Arkansas). Recently we have joined as WalmartLabs, we share managers, data centers and GEC has given us (ISD) a lot of the work load with none of the work going to GEC.

Starting 2018 GEC will now have unlimited PTO time, health benefits way cheaper and plus the better pay and stocks compared to Arkansas. We have been told they have done this for Key Talent Areas to be more competitive and this will not be done to Arkansas because we are by the Home-office.

I can understand the pay because housing in California is more expensive, but the PTO and Health piss a lot of us in Arkansas OFF. In essence we (ISD) are remote employees for GEC. We get the work but none of the benefits. They don’t give a crap about us and they are removing a lot of the culture that Sam Walton put in place that made Walmart what it is today.

GEC PTO unlimited
ISD PTO 36 max days after 15 years this is also sick time and holidays.

Rant Over now you Know.

Exactly, OP... relax... unlimited PTO is good for the company, not the employees! You still have to request for PTO, and someone is always counting. And if you leave the company, you have nothing to cash out.

That’s pretty shitty but look at it from their POV. No one in Arkansas has any other options locally, meanwhile everyone at Labs or Jet could easily jump ship for more cash without even moving.

Dude no one takes unlimited pto, people will take 2 weeks max. I would take 20 days over it anyday

The way they are going about the unlimited PTO in California is bullshit, though. We have to exhaust our PTO before we can use Fiex PTO. Have you checked out spam on slack? Big angry discussion there

OP you should be THANKFUL! Studies have shown that unlimited vacation actually means employees take less vacation than those who have PTO. Your counterparts in CA will likely only take 1-2 weeks per year. That's not fun at all.

PayPal is doing well. Some mgrs still keep track of vacation days though... Definitely not unlimited.

Good rant. I sometimes forget Walmart has other employees than the interesting cashier and front of house managers.

I get the anger, but let me tell you that GEC associates are also not that happy with these new flexPTO rules. I get that GEC get different health benefits than ISD which they started last year, that should have been rolled out to all employees. But i am pretty sure you don't want flexPTO ( atleast the way they are rolling it out, it is borderline illegal to force employees to use old PTO than cashing them out). I have been to bentonville and can definitely say that associates in GEC don't share the same values and fan following to Mr. Sam as much ISD associates do. But if it is time to change the Walmart to gear up for new challenges in e-retail. I am pretty sure it is time for us to change the culture too. I know that it is hard to get away from "how it use to be", but the world is much more competitive now and somehow treating all employees fairly is not in top goals for companies anymore.

You kind of have to understand that California and Arkansas are almost different countries man... if Walmart offered CA employees the same benefits they gave AR employees, nobody in CA would work there. It may even be illegal. Labor laws in CA favor the employee more than in the South. You have two choices: organize and reform labor law in AR, or leave the South for greener pastures.

Remember that employment law is also different in California than in Arkansas. Look at the Employee Handbook and note the "California only" rules.

Also another hot topic here is the Paternity leave. GEC gets 12 weeks paid leave, ISD gets 2 weeks paid leave.
