Any advice for someone who wants to move to a larger area, but doesn't want to show up without a job lined up? I've heard a lot of companies throw out resumes of people who are too far away (across the country)-- does that statement have weight?

Depends on the company’s policies. If they aren’t offering relocation then they might not look at applicants with addresses far from their locations. Take your address off of your resume maybe. Once when I was job searching in London but lived in Minneapolis, MN I used a friends address in London which helped me get an interview.
