Speaking as a Canadian, Canada is a fantastic place to settle down but if you're looking to make fat stacks the US is where you should be aiming. TC in the Great White North is way less than what you'll find down south.

If you are looking to settle with a family though, Canada hands down.

Why is Canada better than Usa?

Expedia Anony🐭 Jun 13, 2019

Not USA. Not right now at least.

Why not?

Expedia Anony🐭 Jun 13, 2019

Lol really? It's very anti-immigrant right now. Unless you qualify for GC in EB1, don't come here.

Internal transfer is best bet for US. Dont think companies in US will hire from India, H1B is not easy

Depends. If money is the main factor.. and you don’t mind being demonized because you are an immigrant (like what the majority are doing to the minorities in India right now under the supreme leader) then USA! Quality of life but cold weather and lesser income Canada. Fun. Australia. Still a lil racist thou, but not as bad as US immigration policies.

Is racism really an issue for engineers in Silicon Valley? In my opinion, anyone telling an engineer or potential FAANG employee not to move to the USA is giving bad career advice. Trumps rhetoric hasn’t had that much of an effect especially in CA.

Amazon KczV57 Jun 13, 2019

Not directly from the people, CA is amazing, in fact i think the whole west coast has amazing people. Its the laws and polices that are in place and the new ones that are spinning up. They are only making the lives harder.

I'm looking for the same things too. USA through internal transfer is best, like others said. Next best options are Singapore and Switzerland. Latter has fewer jobs though. EU and Canada have lower pay and higher taxes and CoL, and mediocre career opportunities, so I didn't consider them seriously. I interviewed and got offers in EU (low salary and high taxes) and Singapore. Unfortunately, the Singapore offer was also average so I turned it down. Plan to get L1 transfer from here, or try again for better offer in Singapore maybe.

May I ask you what companies in Singapore/EU you've interviewed with? Pls DM me.

Amazon, eBay, Zalando, Grab, Gojek, Palantir

Keep in mind the US visa situation. It will suck the life out of you. It's probably a bit more money but I have been there and it's not worth it especially if you are moving with your family. If you are a bachelor go ahead (still with visa issues which you can put up with). One of my friends moved to UK Facebook and says it's great there. His pay was also decent.

US immigration policy's effect on you can range from annoying to deal breaker. If you are planning to settle here, you are looking at decades of wait for GC, and that will have an impact on you/family. It's also much harder to make long lasting social connections. For everything else, US is pretty good, specially to save up some money. Other locations would you pay much lower. Canada has good quality of life, UK is good but there is political uncertainty. As for Australia, I don't know why would anyone choose to move there outside of just visiting for tourism.

Wait today is 150 years (assuming no reform - nothing has passed last 20 years). That is actually a denial as you can't expect to live that long.

Nielsen nqED75 Jun 13, 2019

Isn't Australia much the same as Canada? Always has high ranking in quality of life survey, unlike UK or USA.

Diffbot scxA52 Jun 13, 2019

Nothing better than internal transfer to the US. I have friends who did that and they subsequently moved on to other companies, after working for a few years at Microsoft. US is the best place for a programmer. Canada is easier to immigrate (I notice they are placing ads for PR for skilled immigrants on Instagram), but it pays lower and cost of living is higher. Don't bother with Europe unless you get a really good job there. Garbage pay, maybe work life balance, but you don't even learn much or progress career-wise. All the benefits you get there, you can get in the US as well with a well paying software job. It all depends on why you want to move. If you want to see the world, take any damn job and keep going. If you want more money and better career progression, the US is it. Singapore is also not bad. Long hours, but you can travel a lot around Asia, get first world amenities with familiar people and food. I've known people work in Japan and Korea as well. Lots of work, but it's a very different experience that you'll learn a lot from and it looks amazing on your resume.

Depends on your intention US to be an expat - all of this is possible: make a quick buck, stay relatively untouched by cultural experience, retain your desi-ness, only hang with other desis, bad for developing long term attachments as you will one day leave Canada/EU to be an immigrant - learn local language, assimilate, naturalize, date locals, no big bucks but job and retirement security
