Recruiter makes initial contact. I tell a lighthearted joke in my initial reply. Recruiter says that we aren’t a good fit based off my “style”. The joke: I congratulated them on the Series A and said I wasn’t cheap talent.

Oh yeah then that’s a sort of funny joke. But it’s really easy for the recruiter to not like you. It’s within their power to screen applications, so obviously if they don’t like you they can harm your job search.
What makes you think you are a “talent” ? And that you are not “cheap” ?

Look, I was in the pipeline for a Sr. level regular position (over 300k tc potential) at a company. At the same time another recruiter contacted me for a contractual & hourly position for the same company with 150k potential. What did I say to the 2nd recruiter? I politely said the position is not compatible with my area of interest. End of story. No need to behave like a jerk.
I never intended to be a jerk because I agree, that wouldn’t be cool.

To be fair they wanted a lead engineer for 100k and that was far below expectation.
