Tesla if you hate yourself but believe in Elon's "great vision"

There are still quite a few issues, nothing's perfect yet. In fact someone's tesla drove them into a construction zone the other day and totalled the car with their family in it. Point is, tesla should pay competitively. And even if you say they do, if you work at tesla you still get bare mininum benefits.

That’s just not true. Tesla’s medical is the best on the market. I pay only $25/month with 0 deductible.
Pay wise 4YOE, 310k and I’m not on autopilot team. They make more.

Hm interesting, senior dev's make around 200k at tesla not on AP, highly unlikely. Also insurance was good there yes, but 0 401k?
      Sep 26
    • Tesla lambdaq
No 401. 200k is making somebody who doesn’t know what it’s doing.

No it's a pretty known thing 😂 new grads also offered 100k with a 5k signing this year in alot of teams

There is no gamified career ladders, promo committees, performance reviews or any of the usual kindergarten stuff. Few product managers compared to engineers. People just do work.

Tesla pays the most (for the right teams) and actually has the best shot at achieving autonomy.

I've ridden in Teslas plenty of times.
They are great at highways - but THAT'S IT. vision is going to severely fail you at anything beyond that.
I dare you to put a Tesla on autopilot on the streets of San Francisco.

Also, humans don't only use vision. We also use hearing and a conscience - among other things.

Waymo doesn't just come close to Tesla "auto-pilot", it surpasses it. The number of disengagements and collisions is lower on waymo than all the others.

Humans use conscience... I thought you were going to say humans have a lidar built into their heads. Seriously guys, there is no product in the market comparable to Tesla. Is cruise being shipped to customer vehicles? Works outside of a geo fence? Tell me when it is.

Can’t compare Tesla AP being used by hundreds of thousands of people to vaporware being peddled on this thread.

Lol Tesla is not comparable to these two.

Waymo is way more google-like in terms of culture. Depends on the team but overall Waymo moves quite slow now as an old company. If you prioritize work life balance then maybe Waymo is better.

Cruise is still more on the startup ish side. Infra progressing fast, so compared to smaller self driving companies who barely has any infra, Cruise is a clear win. Cruise also is full of people who are super passionate, and it’s easier to drive for impact here than at Waymo.

That’s not speculation. Those are fact that have been revealed by recent depositions of Elon Musk himself under penalty of perjury, the securities fraud allegations were actually charged and then settled by Musk.

Only the accounting fraud has not been officially documented in court proceedings.

How come you got laid off? Looking to join Tesla rsn myself, any tips are much appreciated.
      Sep 25
    • They way lay offs work in Tesla is not known. People randomly go home. Nobody has idea how it happened.
I have seen high performing folks (almost everybody) either gets laid off or fired or burn out.
Think Tesla as jump ship and is a massive startup. Also the fear for Elon is real inside Tesla. (Almost) any decision can be overruled by Elon.

Yeah Elon seems like a shitty person to work for. Constantly making crazy public deadlines that no sane engineer would agree to (like self driving in one year in 2017). And then making a stink about it when the impossible doesn't happen
      Sep 26
    • We have our respect to Elon anr what he is trying to do with the oil mafias. I have some conspiracy theory that the gas industries are sabtoging the environment for corporate profits.
Some of those deadlines are meant to be aspirational but unless you make public promise some are hard to influence and come by. This requires understanding of system dynamics.
Even FSD is going make.AP 99% autonomy as 100% possiblity deeplearning model doesn't appear to exist and if it happens it might probably violated the laws of probability in some sense.

    • Google Woopsy
I really meant “the team is falling apart”. The codebase is what it is, it won’t like suddenly get worse.
Imagine trying to move really fast on a project that is technically super challenging (real time embedded C++ with heterogeneous HW, on a domain that is still cutting edge).
This is already difficult, but add a high turnover on top of it...

    It’s like sophie’s choice!

Tesla has really talented ML team and some great infra. Pay is garbage, and you have to schlep it to palo alto every day. Plus proximity to Elon and no life balance mean revolving door of teammates.

Cruise pays good. Is in the city. And has a few exciting projects. Downside is, kyle is like a small scale elon and he too will ruin whatever it is you dreamed of working on. Plus the orgs are very political.

Waymo is the most political of all. I am surprised they get anything done. Although they don’t lately. Multiple redundant teams and reluctance in changing bad architecture, are widely available. People bring smelly foods on the shuttle.
