Because a bunch of people got super greedy and joined trash companies like WeWork and Compass hoping to strike it at rich. The CEOs of these companies are looting shareholders and leaving the employees and investors holding the bag.

I exercised my options when I departed WW in Q2 of 2019. 1,000 options at a strike price of $26. At the time, with $47B valuation, this would have made a ton of sense. Not so much now.
