Could someone pls clarify how PIP works at amazon. My best friend has joined amazon few months ago. She has not even completed a year and her boss just sent an abrupt email to her asking her to come up with some measurable goals for improvement in few areas identified by the boss. And the boss gave a time line to start working on those goals in a few days for up to a period of 45 days and also saying that he will engage the HR for next steps. This all is very confusing as normally in PIP a proper plan is shared by the boss but here the boss is asking the employee to come up with the goals. My friend is very shocked as she had been getting great feedback from folks she has been working with, totally unexpected. Boss has never sent any dev plan prior to this. She had just joined after school and is in very terrible situation.
Lol rip
Ask her to listen to this song. Should help 😁 https://youtu.be/JSUIQgEVDM4 The End - Doors
OP, tell your friend to keep her chin up and GTFO. Also it would help, if she can think where it all went wrong at Amazon and tries to improve on those areas
Your friend days are numbered @amazon. Ask your friend to first stop stressing out. Many people go through this. Best thing to do: Keep calm and like others suggested start preparing for interviews. Start Leet coding and learn via coderpad or hacker rank. It helps Learn some system design (2/4 concepts a day must b enough ) Ask anyone here for help with a concept. A small request goes a long way :) Goodluck to your friend and god bless !
In other news: Amazon is hiring
For the first time in his life, the boss is writing in complete sentences with no typos and using proper grammer, right? That email was really for HR and his boss.
Idiots apply quotas to statistically small samples. That's why your friend is on PIP. That's what we get when math and EQ lack among the decision-makers at the lower and middle levels, including HR.
Because of aggressive quotas this year your friend has unluckily been selected as part of attrition target. There is nothing really she can do except start interviewing outside. The manager will only keep pointing at faults and will head for pivot and pip unless there is some drastic improvement.
What kind of quotas are these? I mean every org must let go a certain percentage of employees every year?
Is this normal at Amazon?
What position?
Technical manager
Sorry for your friend. Probably she is in Dev plan and is on the way to PIP. It is not mandatory for the managers to share the Dev plan status with employees. They can very well put the employees on Dev plan without informing them. Please ask her to start preparing for interviews and there are tons of opportunities outside Amazon. All the best for her.
