What Microsoft benefits do you lose at Amazon?

Microsoft OhUl64
Sep 22, 2018 69 Comments

When comparing offers, benefits make things less black and white. Microsoft has great benefits that are easy to overlook when a big signing bonus offer is made, but that’s a long term benefit whereas the immediately available benefits can really impact life starting on Day 1.

Sounds like Microsoft is better for the things below but how much?

- 401k match
- HSA contributions
- Tuition reimbursement
- Paid time off (vacation + sick + holidays)
- Average cash (not stock) bonuses
- Microsoft Prime discounts (especially on Apple, Mercedes and other cars)

Are they identical for these below? If not, what’s the difference?

- Medical & dental including ortho, deductibles & max out of pocket
- prescription co-pay?
- Pre-existing conditions issues for new hires?
- YMCA membership / health club benefits?
- ESPP discounts and limits?
- Patent application rewards?

Business Travel considerations?

Any huge Amazon benefits Microsoft doesn’t have?

What else am I forgetting?

Benefits wise, Amazon doesn't even come close to Microsoft. I have lost two of my teammates to Microsoft in last 2 months, and I am considering the move myself.

Over all amazon has nothing over Microsoft and is crushed hands down over the mentioned benefits. Those benefits accounts for about 25-30K difference

      We get 3 weeks Vacation

We get 50% match 401k up to 4% of salary (max 6.4k)

My health care cost be about 200/m for a family.

Amazon also has lots of discounts beyond put 10% off amazon.

I’m not getting 20k here, pretty much less than 10k and only applicable to few people (families)

    • Amazon / Eng Dupper
For example you buy a car maybe once every 3-5 years so that value is really only worth a couple hundred bucks

We also get discounts at most auto dealers. Just show them your badge and they have a compare discount

We also get cell phone discount of around 20%

I wish I got a gym discount but in reality that costs me like 350 per year.

How do you work 30 less hours? You work 10 hours a week? If so you “win”

Do you have hsa? Does amazon give you money in hsa? Even single person here receives like 1500$ per year so you can go to doctors. You guys don’t have yearly bonus neither. Here we have it. It is like 10k-20k per year.

That 800$ is not only gym membership. You can buy basketball shorts and use that 800$, you can buy bicycle, running shoes anything sport related even Apple Watch and use 800$. Don’t tell me you can only use 350$ per year

I forgot something Microsoft allow you to buy up to 15% of your base salary in ESPP at 10% discount.
So if you put in max and sell on the day you receive. You gave yourself a 1.5% raise. In most case that is like 2000$-2500$

Hey! Parental leave at Microsoft doesn't have a 1-year qualification requirement?

I'm a new dad with a one month old kid. I'm joining Microsoft in a couple weeks. So I would be eligible for the 12 week paternal leave from the day I start? That would be sweet.

401k match is 50% up to full $18.5k IRS max at MSFT. It's 50% up to 4% of your pay (2% match) at AMZN. So, $9k vs probably $3k. That's the biggest one.

Medical and other related benefits are less rich at AMZN, still not too bad, but much more average for a big company where MSFT was very generous.

There is no bonus at AMZN but the stock component is generally more (especially when it doubles in a year, obviously ymmv).

Paid time off is not as different as I thought. I left MSFT after 11 years, I was at 4 weeks vacation plus 12 Holidays, so 32 total paid days off. AMZN is 2 weeks vacation for year 1 then 3 weeks at year 2, plus 1 week of personal time, and 6 Holidays. So at year 2, you have 26 days. Not really all that notable, especially when I had trouble using all of it at MSFT from a practical standpoint.

AMZN has some "employee extras" but they pale in comparison to Prime.

AMZN has no ESPP. I liked at MSFT that you could give yourself a 1.5% raise with ESPP.

No Pro Club membership at AMZN. There is an employee extra which is waived new member fee but that's pathetic, you won't want to be a member there with their monthly fee.

MSFT reimbursed $75 monthly for mobile, AMZN does $50. Petty difference, but pretty representative of the general gap in benefits.

At AMZN, really the stock is the only plus. That, and there are far more career paths opening up, and a far more experimental culture, and more opportunities to make an impact. MSFT has a long and storied history of blocking employee transfers to other teams. AMZN in my experience encourages it.

      OP
      Very useful - thanks!

Microsoft offers everyone 4 weeks of vacation then 5 weeks of vacation after 5 years IIRC

      I’ve had 5 for a while so I forget

Unused vacation time is paid out when you leave so that’s where it can come in handy when switching

I forgot one more. Most don't think about it. Subsidized lunch. At MSFT, you can get a really, really good lunch (like grilled salmon with a side of grilled veggies) for $5 or $6. At AMZN if you want anything with meat, get ready to pay $12 or $13 at a minimum. I miss the MSFT cafeteria service.

Last one. MSFT mostly has offices with doors. At AMZN, unless you are L8 or higher, get comfortable with high density seating.
      Sep 23, 2018
    • Microsoft ElimG
Doors depend on the department you work in. :-( They are saying that eventually everybody will be on open offices.

Also subsidized lunches are more expensive now - so less subsidized than it used to be. Still costs about 8-9 bucks for a full meal. Also the quality may vary depending on which caf you go to.

This is highly variable, depending on teams. Sure, there are teams working on really cool stuff at Amazon. But there are also teams working on things like tax computation & vendor management systems, which are definitely important but not in any particular way headline making.

I think fathers get 18 weeks paid of paternity leave, mothers get 24 weeks? 12 PTO days, 2 floating holidays, 10 sick days and 3-5 weeks of vacation. Paid Care giver leave if you need to take care of a sick family member or to attend a family members funeral. 100 hours of childcare at $8/h? No monthly health insurance premiums plus $2k HSA contribution. Paid Orca card, free Microsoft commuter bus to and from work if you are close to a stop.
    Sep 22, 2018 12
    • Microsoft ElimG
Whether you use the days depends on you and your health. No doctors note, usually you just send a mail to your lead/ team saying that you are sick and that's it. Many people don't get around adding the days to the timesheet, so it is barely counted. As long as you get your work done of course.

That’s a pretty good list OP. I switched a few months back and you make all that and then some in higher TC. But one thing that you don’t is time off. MSFT is hands down better when it comes to that. Financially you will be better off but you will be longing for time off and public holidays. E,g. No Friday after Thanksgiving off. Amazon has I think 6 and msft 11. Also, big difference in paid vacation and sick time.

Maximum out of pocket for insurance can be super high if you get a lot of medical help. I think it s approx 9000 out of pocket worst case at amazon
