Interested in platform and infrastructure engineering work.
You decide in bootcamp, there are lots of options
What would you say is the amount of time spent working on new challenging projects vs addressing technical debt or working on low hanging fruit?
It completely depends on your team and level. If you want to address technical debt, thatās great and people will appreciate you for it. However, in my experience thereās basically no incentives to address technical debt when it comes to promotions/performance reviews. Thereās a lot of SOA migration work to be done... Iām not sure if that answers your question.
to me data platform is the most interesting one and a team that I might consider transferring to, I will let others comment on the specific technical challenges in their day to day
Trips platform has the most interesting work imo. Ambitious roadmap, strong leadership, commitment from e-staff to make it successful.
Can you comment on the kind of projects?
It really depends on what you are looking for, Airbnb is a pretty big company at this point. From catching up with tech debt through abstracting and optimizing multi-source data lakes to modifying and revamping dapper for distributed tracing you can find a lot of work here. Most of the projects will probably come from the fact the company grew a lot over the last few years and weāre still catching up on infra side, eg testing, deployment systems, dev tools and moving out from a monolithic codebase. Lately ingestion systems started hitting limits and there are projects to scale them even more. To get more details ask to meet some managers and engineers through your recruiter, they are more than happy to set something up even before you sign.
Thanks! Looking forward. Any other pointers or maybe things to stay away from?
Best advice I can give you is to just talk to as many people as possible and be clear on what youāre looking for. Generally this is one of the few places where most people are really cool and helpful, and they can be very straightforward about the goods and bads. Ask them for both :)
