Heard congress distributing wealth
Serious/lame post. Sorry, if you’re here for entertainment maybe don’t waste time on this one. (Background: Immigrant studying in the UK, top of my class while working 25h/w. supporting myself, no family here. had to temporarily withdraw from my university course because I couldn’t pay rent. Currently working for £8/h trying to save money. Going back to uni in September. Hopefully will be able to focus on uni and interview prep to get an internship offer with a good company. See my other post for more background) I’m blown away by some people’s TCs around here. Literally 1% of some people’s TC would change my life. (Not going to beg for money, don’t worry. It’s just crazy to think about). My spending was slightly higher than 10k/year for the last two years Everyone’s for themselves and that’s what it is, but I genuinely want to know: Do you have any ideas to raising money for getting through university? Are there US companies offering remote work? Are there individuals or companies that would consider sponsoring someone (me) through university? I was top of my class and with 75% of my energy focused on surviving. Everyday I struggle thinking that I’m capable but can’t use my potential because I need to work odd jobs to pay for basic things. (It’s probably the most millennial snowflake bs thing I’ve ever said, but it’s how I feel) I see people around me who don’t study as hard and basically get ahead because they have families that support them. I came to the UK thinking that capitalism’s free market will sort everything out. It was a great decision coming here, but I’ve learnt that capitalism isn’t quite as equitable as I thought. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Also, I’ve never ever engaged with any internet communities until this one. I weirdly feel part of the internet for the first time
Have you looked at Fiverr or Task rabbit? You will have to decide if it's worth your time, but there are certainly some tasks which pay well Also depending on your field, try to get a paying internship if that's an option.
I haven’t. Will do, thanks! I’ve replied more about the internship on another comment.
Look for paid internships. As an example, California requires that interns be paid and tech interns in the Bay Area make an hourly equivalent to new grad pay at most big companies. Summer work funds expenses during the school year.
I know but getting an internship requires preparing for it. When working 20+ hours on top of coursework that’s impossible. (I get the “if you want it you can do it” but I’ve tried and ended up at A&E lol. There’s simply 24h in a day) This is why I am trying to secure funding for my next year of study: so I can focus on uni and prepping for a good internship that would then pay for my next semester.
Is scholarship not an option? Id say put 20+ hrs in studies instead of working so u can get a scholarship.
Before moving to UK I was hoping there would be some sort of scholarships. I’ve been very disappointed to find out this is not true. There’s a chance I’m not looking in the right places, hence my post
Do you need to talk to someone? Are you alone?
I don’t even know at this point. When I needed to temporarily withdraw from my course I was at my lowest. The university offered some therapy sessions and they really helped. Yeah I guess I’m a bit alone. Even when I’m around my closest friends I still feel that they don’t understand what I’m going through. I just want to study, but I’m always set back by these financial problems. And I don’t want to always be the one that talks about how much in need I am. I don’t know... My family/ people at home haven’t lived or gone through what I go through, so they don’t understand and can’t help, and my friends in the UK come from good families and they are financially secure so don’t understand what I’m going through either. They’re very empathetic and that helps a lot, but doesn’t solve the problem necessarily. Hope that makes sense? I’m basically between two worlds that I’m alienated from, and need some help to break into this western world
My first advice is to get out of Blind. Blind is very good to help you push and motivate to achieve your dreams... it is also very bad bcoz there will be someone with higher salary than you and you will be always in comparison/jealousy/dissatisfaction mode. Create a plan and execute on it. Btw most immigrants students from asia/india have same story as yours. Watch Hollywood movies and think western world will be easy .. actually as in life.. you have to go through all ups and down
Not that I have any specific ideas, but feel free to DM me if you need to chat with someone. I would consider reducing your course load and try to see if you can find a job. Another alternative is if you could take loans, complete your education ASAP and get a job.
Do you code or do web design or copywriting? If so, register on upwork and start earning remotely doing as many hours as you like. Did this myself during uni
Have you consider paying university through loans? Any specific reason that did not work?
I’m already getting a loan for my tuition fee. Getting a high interest loans to cover my living costs is an option, but it feels very wrong for reasons that may have to do with how I’ve been brought up. I think getting one of these loans can lead to nasty experiences down the line. Would you disagree? Have you taken a loan yourself?
What are you studying in coursework? Tech. Computer sci or something else ?
Computer Science and AI. Mostly CS stuff but I take the odd neuroscience / philosophy of AI optional modules
CS/AI is hot field. Will grow for a long time. Your job prospects are rather secure. I would increase the student loan and focus on prepping for internship. That’s more valuable long term than just hourly work to save money.
Hi there, I feel your pain! It was always a little painful to hear uni friends chat about how their parents paid for tuition, rent, everything everything while I could barely afford the bus fare each morning. (True story: one fellow student was daughter of 80s pop star. Used to drive her Lexus into uni every day, paying congestion fee then park it in pay by the hour car parks all day! She thought nothing of it!) For term time work I highly recommend trying to get a job as a theatre usher (stage, not cinema). I did this myself and it was perfect. Lots of students, jobbing actors and foreigners with multiple jobs do it because it is so undemanding (in fact, quite relaxing) and fits in perfectly at the end of a long day. You’re basically there to help clear the theatre in an emergency, but that hardly happens. In reality you sell or tear tickets for 45mins pre show, 15 at interval and 20 outgoing. You’ll spend half the show on break, leaving you free to study in a quiet and comfy environment. The other half you spend “sitting in”, which means sitting at the back of the auditorium in case something goes wrong. You can either relax and watch the show or discretely bring in a book and reading light. I did this throughout uni and it’s great because it pays as well or slightly better than most customer service jobs, the hours fit perfectly around study (6-11pm weekdays, 2-11pm with a long break in the middle on matinees wed and sat), you can study at work, and the work itself is not demanding at all. Plus, if you go to any of the major London unis you can walk to most theatres in less than 20 minutes. Brush up a customer service CV and drop it by every stage door in London 😊 In terms of programming roles, pm me your dev cv - I’m a Fintech recruiter and very happy to take a look at it. Best wishes
I sadly don’t have a suggestion (I think you are already doing the right things), but am wishing you all the best.
Thanks for your thought anyway. All the best to you, too!
