The TC obsession is misguided, you are just betting on a stock. What matters for comparison is base and lots of companies have 150-200k base.
    Apr 19 29
    • I moved out of msft for higher base and huge rsu. Even if stock tanks by 50% at new company I’ll still end up better then before.

What matters is what’s in your bank account at the end of the day. You should be aware of your risk tolerance and adjust the value of your stock compensation accordingly. Having a high base and low stock might protect your comp from decreasing so much in a downturn, but it might also make you a top target for layoffs if the stock crashes.

Base salary pays your mortgage. Stock keeps you and the company aligned.

    • Base salary pays your mortgage monthly. Huge rsu pays off your mortgage completely.

I joined facebook last August, which was the worst moment in the company's history to join (stock averaged at 200). Today the stock is just 9% below that. Yup FANG stock is as good as cash. Often much better.

Stock isn't better than cash equivalent, but almost no companies pay as much as companies that give regular $100k+ stock refreshers. Certainly not "New".

@eldorodo: no, I didn’t leave AWS but rather shitty retail team. Happy with my decision and would love to come back to AWS given the right time. As a matter of fact if you have AWS experience for 4-5 years expect to get paid in the ball park of 400k+ at OCI (although AWS will always have more challenging work).

I don’t want to be an sde but have experience programming in SAS, building data warehouses, and front end analytics platforms. Also managed analysts for last 5 years. What kind of roles would I look at besides PM?

Why does dropbox pay such high? Do they have difficult problems? They used to store files on S3.

We don’t use S3 anymore. I think any problems that we are solving are more difficult than designing S3. Check out Dropbox technical blog. Dropbox Seattle pays over 350K for IC3. Come to Dropbox if you’re interested.

I thought gaming Industry is brutal with long hours of work due to many youngsters who are willing to go extra miles all the time (since the work is fun and people are passionate). • Amazon / Eng bCxp50
Amazon L5s fall into a huge range in terms of scope, so if you're pushing L6 scope already and can get up-leveled, a lot of companies in the area will easily reach or pass 300.

If not--and without competing offers--it's going to be tough...Snap and OCI are probably the best bets. Google and possibly FB technically can hit 300 for their L5 equivalents (L4/E4), but likely won't unless you have a better offer elsewhere. Most are likely to be closer to the low to mid-200s, at least until the refreshers kick in.

    • Facebook / Eng idne
There are levels of maturity and complexity of projects that one has to deal with.

Sure, one can be a CTO and run a 100 person startup a few years out of school but that's not the norm.

OP at Amazon being sde2 likely hasn't spearheaded complex multi-stack cross-functional impactful work and will have a difficult time to do well at FB as E5.

E5 lines up with SDE3/L6 or experienced L5 (performing as L6 but didn't get promo yet)
