You join a team at a company. Start the perm process (again). Get an i140 months later (again) Maybe 4 years later a junior engineer joins your team, gets a GC within a year. Teammates who know less about this process ask you why you’re still messing with the H1b process when you fly back home every year to restamp your visa (again) for the nth time. And you have to explain its because you were born in the wrong country. I’m just filling out the terrible DS160 for the millionth time and the website is so broken it makes me super mad. I mean, everything else aside, why is the H1b renewal process such a shitshow? If the laws as they currently are mean I can work in the US for ever and keep renewing my H1b if my i140 is filed, why not just make the H1b renewal process automatic? This is all so terribly pointless.
The thing is.. if you work in a FAANG type company, H1b + i140 is effectively a GC but with pointless extra paperwork, stress and expenses for taxpayers. Literally no one benefits
There, there. We chose to be in this mess. 😐
Sure? I personally didn’t know about how bad the backlog was or that it was country capped when I came over
Hey man - not sure if you’re Indian but gonna assume you are. Not sure how old you are, but gonna assume you’re my age (34) with a wife and kid. I moved to the US 7 years ago and got fed up with this process and left. I work out of Uber Amsterdam and it’s honestly the best decision I made. I work better hours, put my kid in an incredible school, and have all the same perks that I did in the US. I’m even healthier since I bike everywhere. Yeah I took a 18% pay cut but I’m literally wealthier than every salaried person around me - a feeling that’s so weird and one almost impossible to have in SF. Just move. The US owes you nothing and you owe them nothing. They can barely keep all citizens happy let alone us.
All this gives a lot of pleasure to the MAGA crowd. As someone said correctly: the cruelty is the point .
Bull. None of this has changed since Bush Jr through Obama to Trump.
This. Especially since Trump's admin was the one proposing getting rid of separate country pools. Which would benefit those in giant pools like India or China, but def fuck over those in the general pool. Still on the fence about this tbh and would rather see an auction-based H1B system, where within each industry, employers have to bid for H1Bs, thus eliminating the whole underpaid worker visa abuse by Tata and Accenture (which is one of the biggest reasons contributing to the insanely large Indian H1B waiting pool).
