Work takes up so much time (and I work at Cisco) that I can't enjoy life. Did we all sell out for a few dollars? It's depressing to work 9-5.
I go to the gym daily and take every opportunity to be outdoors or travel. I’ve used up every long weekend to travel in the US and saved up my vacation for international travel. I’ve been to half of the National Parks across the western US and over 30 countries. It takes planning and commitment but it’s been worth it to me.
Nice. How much on average do you spend on traveling per year
Maybe 10-12k a year? It’s expensive but again it’s money well spent for me personally. I’ll probably be winding this down as an expense as I’ve covered most places I’ve wanted to go. In the future, I’ll focus on places closer to home where I can enjoy the outdoor activities I like now.
Seriously, at Cisco? Many people take it easy even able to have other careers on the side ( restaurant, real estate)
I play in a hockey league (shinny / rec), an ultimate Frisbee rec league, and a tennis league. I find things to do after work - mostly figure out where the next weekend is going to be. Last weekend I went to the tulip festival up in Skagit then drove a bit farther northeast to check out some national forests. Next weekend is Portland / hood River.
Are you me? That's literally my plans for last and next week. Tulips festival was a little smaller than I expected but still gorgeous. I especially liked when the workers would yell at the people taking pics to get out of the flowers
9 to 5?? That's a sweet deal. Never been in a company that was not 8 to 6. Out of there, during the week I exercise and watch TV or videogames. Weekends are for trips or chilling and going to restaurants
School and sleep.
9 to 5? The rest of the world works those hours. Be grateful you make those few extra bucks. Want shittier WLB? Try finance
6 hours of porn per day. 6 - midnight . Hbu?
It's depressing only if you let it be. I used to think like this too but have started embracing it. Most days I work and then go home and just wind down. Weekends I meet a few friends, go for hikes etc. I take WFHs quite a bit and go visit different cities where my friends are. I spent a lot of time focusing on work and other commitments for the past couple of years and have finally realized that your responsibilities and commitments will never decrease so I shouldn't use that as an excuse to not do anything. It's been a good few months since I changed my approach. I feel like I have plenty of time to relax and do things after work now.
Depressed with Cisco's WLB? It can't get any better than Cisco if you're looking at WLB.
It is difficult but not impossible, the trick is to make sure you prioritize and make time for your activity. Are you passionate about anything? Can be woodworking, or gardening, or reading a book - anything really. Make an appointment with yourself. Let's say Saturday afternoon, you clear 4 hours of your day and ask significant other to take care of kids if you have any, and just do what you like. Of course make sure to return the favor!
What if you aren't really passionate about anything? How do you become passionate?
You gotta figure something out, nobody knows you better than yourself. You gotta expose yourself to new experiences so you'll figure out what's for you and what's not.
