What do you talk about with your manager in 1:1?

3 yoe software engineer at Facebook.

I have a hard time filling the 30 minute weekly 1:1 with my manager.

Generally spend the first 10-15 mins syncing up on projects I'm working on and maybe what's coming next and all that.

Occasionally stuff comes up (PTO, performance reviews, changes in the company, etc) but usually outside of project updates I don't know what I should be talking about with my manager.

I'm generally happy with my job and I've had great performance reviews so far, but I feel like my manager expects more.

At the end of my last 1:1 my manager suggested I think of thinks to talk about for our next one, but I don't know what he's expecting.

Also your current manger is a dumbo if he can’t guide you to things to talk about. Lastly, if your talking status in 1:1 it’s a complete waste of time

Ask him about the challenges he is facing and how you can help him further.

It really should be a time when you talk with your manager about how you plan to to grow on your career. Not status reporting...

Career growth, improvements in product, mentor ship, opportunities outside of current role are some of the things to talk about

Dude, I just got my perf degraded mostly because of this. Apparently you don't bring complaints and issues but solutions to these meetings. In my eyes that pretty much deprecated the need for them (if I have a solution I don't need to talk about the problem)

I have come to understand the absolute necessity of 1:1s. It is your time to occupy top mind space in your managers head. You are setting yourself up for the next bonus, promotion and move up and u have to position yourself like that in these meetings.

Of course, u need to tick all the right boxes. Enthusiastic, loves challenge, technical skills, right attitude, serious about career progression so that he works towards making it happen. So you better reinforce these traits in every chat you have

Feel free to end up early. I have a lot of 30 minute meetings end up being 10 minutes or so. As long as we get things aligned, why waste time

Yes. I've never had a manager complain about having time freed up so we can resume getting things done.

Project meetings are for project status. 1:1 should be focused on two things: 1. talking about your performance including giving you kudos for good thing or giving you constructive feedback for things that should improve. Also your performance rating should not be a surprise at the end of the year, so they should be telling you where you are as the year progresses, quantifiably, in your one-on-ones and you should likely have this documented in your notes or something. 2. your manager should be discussing your career growth and where you are in terms of that and how he can help you get there or what things you need to do to improve your performance such that you get promoted.

Spend your next 1:1 taking about this: Ask, if our roles are reversed what would you talk about on our 1:1’s 🧐

Did not have scheduled 1:1s in years. Why waste time?

Surely you aren't doing perfectly in every job area, and are not perfectly happy with everything and everyone?

Career development is a big one for me. I sync up projects, explain what I've done, and ask how I can start to integrate more work into my sprints so that I can get the role I want.

It is worth noting that it will make a manager look good if they can promote their people, so they will actually try to help.
