What do you think about starting your career at IBM?

Is this a bad move? Or a good one? I got an offer for about 100k and don't have competing offers yet. I really like the people that I interviewed with but am afraid that this might not be a good job to start my career. Do people move from IBM to FAANG or will there be good future opportunities beyond IBM?

  • Congrats on the offer!
IBM is a very well known company, and you will learn a lot there. You can easily transition to FANG or any company after, as long as you Leetcode.
If you don’t get any better offers, you should definitely take it.

For the amount of shit posting and negativity that occurs on Blind, I'm impressed by how supportive and encouraging the people are on this thread. Almost feels like reddit.

      Keep it up!

What is wrong with you? IBM is a great company to have on your resume. Don't chase an acronym dude. You do you, and be happy.

Bad. Accept and keep interviewing. Renege if you have too. IBM ain't worth shit.

Also reneging is a shitty move. Much better to ask to postpone the deadline to make a decision than to accept and renege.

    • Amazon snostreblA
The world isn't so small that reneging will come back to bite you in the ass with any meaningful probability. I've had two people renege on teams I've worked on in the past and I don't remember either of their names. If companies get to withdraw offers willy nilly, withdrawing is fine as well.

Anyone can move to FAANG from anywhere, I started my career as an auditor (accountant) at a Big 4 consulting firm before I got into tech. The biggest thing is how much drive you have to push yourself; non-coincidentally, that drive will be helpful for your career regardless of where you work.

Also, congrats on the job offer!

Dude/tte! I was a civil engineer before. Now in Product Management at Amazon. One of my peers was a butcher!!! I hired a young PM who was an artist, and then an assistant to an executive. Modern companies realize that intelligence and critical thinking are a far more valuable skill sets than where you worked before/what you officially learnt.

Can you communicate effectively? Are you (generally) right most times given time to think? Are you always curious? Do you have an unrelenting urge to grow and challenge yourself? Can you collaborate? If the answers are yes, take the job. Your life is in front of you. Unless criminal, your past decisions are not a blocker for career prospects

Can concur, names are not free rides. I’ve seen engineers from FANGs get turned down. It’s a datapoint, that’s all.

IBM might not be a sexy name you can brag about to your friends but its a big company and will absolutely not hold you back in your career in any way, unless you stick around too long.

  • Congrats on the job offer!! I agree with the comment above - you should have no problem moving to FAANG. I worked for 5 years at a "3 man" start up. Got offers from FAANG! They don't really care where you came from. Just solve those damn leetcode problems 😂 Goodluck!!

IBM may not sound as sexy as the newer companies and it may have lost its flair but it is a fantastic company to be in. Not all companies make it to 100+ years and few have contributed to computing as IBM has.

If you are lucky your team and manager will help you grow and even prepare you for a career inside and outside of IBM.

If you join, do start working on internal certifications. Foundation-level is easily doable. Find yourself a mentor and document everything you do for the first PBC cycle (get ahead of this and start sooner rather than later).

Also, IBM is a place where it is easy to pick up new tasks. This is key to growing into the role you want.

If this is not feasible, plan to stay in a role 2-3 years. Do not stay in a role for longer or you will get comfortable and your growth will stagnate.

You are committing career suicide with ur first job. I know people who desperately are trying to leave but no one in the Bay Area wants them. Unless u have no other option and need a visa sponsorship or need it for food and shelter, then yes. Otherwise no!

Sounds like your friends are too dumb to move up a ladder. This also sounds like the same spiel said for people considering consulting companies. Therefore I can say the same shit about a non FAANG company like Palo Alto, "only take a job there if you're too incompetent for FAANG or need food and shelter then yes"

Such a weird state of affairs when the perception is that only 5 companies (FAANG) are worth working for and everything else is questionable, including the pioneers of technology such as IBM. Not a dig at all at anyone, just pondering how disconnected people in technology are (oh irony), especially in the Bay Area.

IBM is stale as hell. Run. If you like creativity. Ownership. Feeling appreciated. Feeling challenged. Run. IBM is full of old 25+ who earned a pension and are raped of ideas so they don’t lose it to keep their heads down and push idiocrocy along. IBM wreaks of mediocrity and people who keep their heads down, never ask questions, never challenge “I told you do this” and it’s run by a bunch of ass hats who cut funding from every single profitable division to fund a bunch of baboons traveling the globe promising lies to clients. Run!

Atleast IBM isn't a poser like all the financial banks that proclaim themselves to be "tech companies" . IBM had it's time and paved the way for lots of companies to shine now. Let the old man go out in peace.

+1, family member worked here for a year and became damn near suicidal. If you have any ambition or ideas to improve things, join a smaller org or startup. IBM is for maintaining status quo. Great for parents or adults 40+. Not great for bright young grads. Unless you prefer stability over all else.

It doesn't matter where you start your career. Focus on learning and enjoying what you do and you will have a fruitful career. Don't get too caught up in FAANG etc at this stage in your life. On a side note, IBM is a very good company and you should be proud to have an offer from them.

FAANG aren't the only good companies on Earth! IBM is responsible for so many advances in Computer Science. They'd likely be a fine company to work for.

More important to your happiness than the actual company you work for is how you get along with your team. Being a part of a shitty team sucks no matter where you are.

Started my career there. It's a great 1st and 3rd job, as they say internally.

IBM was a massive boost to my skills and an amazing place to learn the ins and outs of the tech industry. If you've got a good offer pull the trigger, but don't count on happily punching the clock for 20 years there.
