Doesn't 3 yoe get you a VP title at banks?

Not at Capital One. Mgr > sr mgr > director >sr dir> then VP roles. Other banks seem to have vp every where.

5y you become "eligible" then they have these really political promotion committees. More likely 7yoe on average. It is a level people are considered leads or managers at. But yeah TC at that level is like new grad in SV

For a lot of large companies with footprints in the Bay Area and elsewhere, putting someone at VP is the only way they can get HR to allow the base comp. I interviewed with someone about an SVP role for Citi Labs, but the responsibilities we more in line with and IC Manager level at Capital One.

Capital One compensation is absolute crap and they get what they pay for. They can’t hire good talent in Silicon Valley because they give no equity for most roles and can’t compete for good talent so they get desperate H1Bs, noobs and people who don’t know any better. Capital (no offense) has zero leadership capable of innovation. Their executives they have on the west coast are high functioning cretins...

Also a typical VP role at a decent Bank or Fin tech is typically going to be at least $400K TC.

      Jokes on you buddy, C1 doesn't support H1B 🤦‍♂️

@Capital One. Oh yes they do...the place looks like a Bangalore phone bank boiler room on the inside. The reason for that is that only the desperate will work for their slave wages in the Bay Area. Riddle me this...how much in RSUs did they offer you? Answer of course is: zero. Sometimes they’ll tell you when they desperately rando call people that they’ll pay a hiring bonus to keep a person from leaving cash in the table. But once they drag a person over there’s zero RSUs.

Nope, Capital One hasn’t sponsored new hire H1Bs in tech below Sr Mgr (like 99%of all tech) for over two years now.

Though it is true that they don’t do equity until the director level. Their total comp is actually solid, but equity resonates more in some markets.

Equity as a standard is a SF Bay Area tech thing. Having moved to the area recently, it really blows me away how ubiquitous it is in offerings. I started at C1 in a different market, but it is true that even in SF there are no RSUs before director like @lptH03 says. Base plus bonus is actually decent for a big financial company. 401k match is, well... unmatched.

Anyway, don't say racist shit like that @Ariselu.

@UYkP53, are you claiming there are no boiler room operations in Bangalore? I’m not being mean to anyone from India what I’m saying is that like a Bangalore boiler room is a high turnover situation that scoops up people with few options IMHO that’s what it looks like to me. Have you ever even been or worked in Bangalore? I have. I see a loooong career for you at C1 my dude...

Most branch managers at banks automatically get a VP title, it means nothing. The true VPs are several levels above them and make about 20-40x as much money.

In this day and age 20x-40x sounds like a drastic underestimation.

The thumb rule for pay in Bank is.. closer you are to money flow.. greater would be your pay.. Thus front office roles.. roles which supports groups with high revenue.. gets paid well.

@OP. What state are you in? Also what sort of VP are you (meaning are like PWM, Tech, Bank Operations, etc.) ? I ask because if you’re only getting $140K TC in the Bay Area it sounds like you’re getting screwed to the wall...;-)

It depends on the team. For example people in Citi who worked on Citicoin made a lot more then people working in other tech departments. I don’t think it can be generalized.
