What does fire at will exactly mean?

I know what it means, but what is to prevent the young 25+ year old leadership pure techies of a starrup, not turn around and do away with you before you are vested? Is there any law to protect the vulnerable? (Offer letters state the employee can be terminated with or without reason...it's the "without" we are worried about). How enforceable is "wrongful termination" ?

It means that you can vote with your feet at any time at your will.

"Is there any law to protect the vulnerable?" Not really. If you want to have your rights protected as a worker, try Europe, or a union shop.

If you get fired right before a vest date and you have no history of performance issues then get a lawyer and sue them. You are likely to win. Otherwise nothing.

A lame joke based on Overwatch video game that a few nerds play.

It's probably not in any company's best interest to fire you for no reason.. If they do too much of that they may not be able to attract new talent .. Not saying it doesn't happen.. Does your correct also say binding arbitration?

It is standard text in the states where that is the rule. Startups are always a risk, I am not an expert at it, but several blind posts go into details of what to look out for. The pre vesting would be a dirty move. Look to their track record and other employees, if they have been around long enough. People talk in small companies and you can quickly find out if people are not trustworthy to invest your time there.
