I did internships at $12, $15, and then $30/hr. My fulltime comp, for about a year each, have been $90k, $100k, $110k, $500k, $580k, $750k, and I expect this year to be around $1M. I changed jobs once since graduating; you can probably guess when.

      It's mostly bonus.
Interviews are live coding but problems are a bit different from typical leetcode.
I develop internal tooling for various things.
      I have just a bachelor's degree.

Jane street is an OCaml shop.. which F# borrowed from.. I am guessing that the OP is developing things with OCaml.. it's a specialized skills and need to have that pure FP mindset.
      Jun 10
    • Jane Street Capital / Eng sumce
Very few of the people we hire have experience with OCaml, and most don't have real FP experience. I've never heard of anyone getting fired because they couldn't learn it, either. I don't think it's as specialized as you think.

160k is a very good wage. The thing about blind is:

      1. People only post their comp when they want to flex, so posted are always really high because avg salaries arent shared.

      2. About half are lying.
For instance, last year I made 1.3million...see that was a lie and was so easy.

I’m not sure why you’re playing “immigrant female” card here. I know many immigrant females who have done quite well. If you believe that you’re worth more than what you’re currently getting paid then go for it! There are so many jobs (that pay extremely generously) out there for talented people.

I moved to a larger role in different company. I’ve typically been somewhat prone to take on what some would consider risky moves. But in the end I just focused on my own passion and have never actively tried to optimize my salary. It worked out for me but it’s a bit of an accident I think. It easily could have gone the other way but I don’t really mind. I am sure, had I focused on a more optimal career path, I could be in an even better position today but I’m equally sure I wouldn’t be as happy.

Not just ‘code’.. need to be able to talk big things as part of leadership and spit bs as part of system design and meet your expectations in work . Change job every 2 /4 years and at the end of 15-18 years you have 2m Tc. But push for more By building startups and be around 500 m Tc. After 60 years burry that 500m Tc in the grave

😂 you simply need to be an active participant in your life. You don't need to work hard, you need to work smart. These comments are made by people that do not run their own lives. Rather, life runs them. Poor people always make excuses as to why they are poor. Rich people do what is required to achieve their goals 🤷‍♂️

      Jun 7
    • New / Data bounded
Level change was after 1.5 years. It was roughly a 90k bump including stock and happened mid year so that was the overall tc for that year across two levels.
      Jun 7
    • That really is an incredible progression. What do you think you have been doing differently vs the people that have only managed 5-10k raises per year over the course of their careers?

Have a PhD in hard sciences. So 6 years prior to that was mediocre pay (14k - 28k). After that first three years at startups followed by the rest at FANG. Pay is just an artifact of the job function and choosing the right companies.

Definitely not linear due to startups

    28 YOE, approx:

    ‘91 $35k (eng - not SWE)
‘92 - ‘95 $45k - 55k plus living expenses and part time mba reimbursement (traveling, lcol)
    ‘95 -‘00 - $60 - 80k (management consultant boutique, int’l travel perks)
    ‘01-‘03 - $negative . (My Startup - Bay Area)
    ‘04- ‘06- ~$90k - fintech startup LCOL
‘07-‘13- $100k - $155 management consulting Plus domestic travel perks
‘13 - $150 plus payout of appx $100k from sale of fintech co.
    ‘14 - $175 k mgt consultant

    Launch startup, appx cash comp:
    ‘15- ~$negative + equity
    ‘16 ~ $75k
    ‘17 ~ $200k
    ‘18 - ~$150 k
    ‘19 ~ $400k projected
Goal is to exit with $10 mil + within 2-3 years.

I invested appx $1 mil of my savings in 4 startups over the years, the current one has traction. real estate equity gains from sale of 3 homes of around $500k

If I stayed the course and not done startups I’d probably have a much bigger 401k, higher base comp, and maybe kids. but I’d be bored at work and no real shot at a multi million exit.

Any interest in managerial track? No coding but you have to care a lot more about things (and listen to people complain all day long).

Sales Engineer is another option. Can make some good money there in the right company, but often lots of travel (and not always to interesting places).

You work with a sales guy when pitching how your software solves the potential customer’s issue. Spec docs, prototypes, and proof of concepts. Comp is usually low salary but commissions can be quite lucrative.

Another option is a program architect route, which is doing the same but within a professional services organization for an existing client. More coding but much customer centric and often lots of travel.

Sales engineer can be very lucrative, but won’t compare to FAANG level RSU TC’s. You’ll need 20 years coding experience before you can look to be a pure architect, and even then it depends on the company.

What about the coding is getting you down? Maybe you need to switch to a different industry to find new challenges?

Yes @ Tesla. It can be stressful, but I enjoy the work and I like the team I work with!

Critical to note that TC @ Tesla is very dependent on the org. Some orgs pay more than FAANG (I don't work in one of those.). Some orgs pay similar to FAANG. Some orgs pay much less than FAANG.

Sort of? If you can land a high TC role at Tesla you're almost certainly qualified and capable of landing a similar role/comp in FAANG but with less hours and less stress.

It's not for everyone. Some folks love it, some will hate it. Personally I enjoy it.

I want to be careful so I don't self identify, but yes I've had more than one promotion..

Unlike most companies (I think?) we have two bonus pools per year, although the second one is typically limited to high performers (Most employees are entirely unaware of the existence of the second pool unless they've been on it and/or someone made them aware of it.).
