What is Amazon onsite conversion rate?

Oct 12, 2018 22 Comments

Question ^

It perhaps also varies by role.

From the data points I have, the conversion rate seems pretty high. Was wondering if I'm seeing a biased set of experiences.

Would be great to hear about this from the point of view of people who are on panels on a regular basis.

Amazon has a shitty hiring bar, but you won't believe some of the candidates who we interviewed onsite.

I think Amazon hr does a poor job of screening resumes and phone interviewers ask known questions (like available on leetcode, geeksforgeeks, ctci and some ask Java trivia, design patterns) and do an even worse job.

So although conversion rate might seem low, interviews are actually very easy.

What are the runtimes that you and the others will reject?

Personally, I don't care about runtimes in isolation. What I do care about is the candidate's ability to reason through trade-offs, because that's what matters most when building production systems (and I take a lot of care to choose questions/scenarios that have several viable solutions--if there's one solution that's clearly superior to any other across the board, the question is far too trivial or too contrived to be useful which also means the interviewer sucks at their job). If you choose a solution that has a mediocre runtime but only needs a couple lines of code (e.g. easy to read, easy to maintain) and can justify that choice--say, because you have some reason to believe the set size will never be that large, or because of memory use, or maintainability, or whatever--I really like to see that. Hell, even brute force has a place under certain circumstances. Having an intelligent discussion around these sorts of trade-offs is what'll encourage me to hire you.

I'm relatively isolated in this sort of thinking, though (and I also rarely interview candidates below the SDE3 or at least strong SDE2 level). Per the example I gave above, this company has a lot of code monkey interviewers out there looking for runtime performance above all else. Get comfortable with hashes/caches.

Re: everything being coachable--that's very true. But there's a reason that more senior candidates command a premium over college hires on the market, and the amount of "coaching" they require to be useful is a major part of that.

If they are "actually very easy", why is the conversion rate low?

      Good question, Manhattan.
What questions and answers deserve on-site, and which questions and answers deserve another phone screen?

1 in 100 , make sure you ask your number before interviewing - only if it is divisible by 100 you will be selected

For SDEs recruiting blitz it is roughly 15-20 %
For single candidate loops, a bit higher.
