28 terrorist worshipping idiots just got themselves fired and I've never been prouder to work at Google.
Interviewing in a bunch of companies. They ask what I’m looking for. I was making $105k in NYC in a startup, 5 people total + 2 contractors, pre-seed round. Were working off of angels / debt money. I have 4.5 YOE FE, 1.5+ BE. What should I shoot for in the Valley? $130k? There’s the guy who’s out of a boot camp negotiated $130k, but it was Airbnb. I have no BS MS, but I got a lot of actual coding experience and I’m really into technology and programming, not for the sake of money. A lot of bootcampers just doing it for big cash.
Apart from ignoring standard FANGs and some paper money startups, the general median pay is ~110 - 150K TC range
Depends heavily on what level you land and stage of company. These are very rough estimates based on personal experience/friends. Equity can be 0.01% - 0.5% of the company SD1 - early stage: 80-100k SD1 - mid size: 90-110k SD2 - early stage: 100-130k SD2 - mid size: 110-150k Senior - early: 120-150k Senior - mid size: 140-170k
May I ask how SD1 / SD2 correlates with YOE?
SD1 (L3) everyone starts here. Some companies call this Software Engineer I, others call it Junior Software Engineer. After 1-3 years you’ll be promoted to SD2 (L4). SD2 is called Software Engineer II or just Software Engineer. A few places like LinkedIn call this Senior Software Engineer. After 4-6 years (total) you may be promoted to Senior Software Engineer (L5). Most places call this Senior Software Engineer. L5 is a terminal level and many people will cap out here. L6 is typically called Staff Engineer and this is very difficult to reach. Might be 10+ years of experience or never. Depends on your skill. Some companies promote faster or inflate titles but ultimately it depends on you.

You just tell the recruiter you would like to hit whichever band your level is but you really care more about the team and mission and are flexible... This way you can try to get what you are worth and negotiate from there if you have to. Source that this works? I litterally just accepted an offer in my appropriate band from a startup
