I have 1+ years experience, curious to know what success is to you. My personal goal is to work for Google in the future. That's about it. What should I be working towards in general ? 10 years down the line, my goal is to be established in the field I'm working in. What kind of a mindset do you have, because I'm sure everyone with 1+ years experience in your time, had the same mindset. TC: 100K in Cedar rapids, Iowa
Working for Google isn't much of a goal. You should pick something a bit more difficult to stretch yourself. Success for me is balance. I have young kids so higher TC isn't a priority. I already make more than I can spend by a wide margin.
Truf.
Make a Milly legitly. With some bop in it.
Waking up every day excited about heading to work, while making enough $ to not worry about $. I am actually fairly close on both.
Awesome good for you man. Is it just FB paying you or do you have other businesses ?
Make about $500K. I think if I get one promo and get to $750K I will be fine. I work on stuff I really like and can move around teams when I get bored.
Google is already a large company. Unless you are a softwares engineer, salary not that great anymore
Ain’t gonna be satisfied making 6 figure income. Gotta be in the hundo mill club. People so complacent at FAANG - “I spend less than I make, I’m happy.” I wanna make a difference. Just look at the comments above and below.
How does earning more mean you made a difference?
It doesn’t. But if I made a lot of money, it’s probably because I made a difference. And I don’t mean like making 600k at FAANG being L7 or something. I mean more than that. It’s not always the case, but in tech it usually is. If you make millions, you’ve probably done something important. Dream higher, never stop.
Success for humans is ever changing, plan for a million dollar house and a Ford GT, but buy a Honda motorcycle and go to Brasil and live the backpackers life for a few years. Success to me is being in a very simple lifestyle or shitty situation by choice, Not by circumstances.
Success for me is to able to live peacefully in a small house beside a lake surrounded by mountains and green trees. I will fish in the morning, hunt in the afternoon, graze cattle in the evening and criticize in dinner. I won't have to hurry, I can read, I don't have to worry about loans. My children will be all grown up and well established. I will be able to sit down on an armchair and enjoy the natural beauty while reading George Orwell with a nice cup of coffee.
Sounds wonderful. I'm coming with you.
All while on the FIRE plan.
Success is not having to work for a living.
Thank you for a common sense answer. This is the only answer
I had the same goal as you. To work for Google. The reason was that I wanted high TC, excellent work life balance, and a company that treated me well. I am super happy at Google, and have no regrets for chasing that goal. Now my professional goal is to get to a certain level at Google. My overall life goal now is to be the happiest I can be, healthiest I can be, and to save and invest enough money to be financially independent so that my family never has to worry about money even if something happens to me.
Google is just a company. Success for me is a high networth at the youngest age possible. The F.I.R.E. plan. Living off passive income.
Just for info, could you expand on FIRE ?
Financial independence retire early is a mindset. Save a major percentage of your income and invest it in a way that gives you passive income. Once passive income reaches a long term sustainable level you can live off of, you no longer need to work. Some achieve this in their late 20s, early 30s, which is my goal.
