What is the achievement of Satya Nadella?

Microsoft has a massive Indian population and almost all Indians will tell you that Satya Nadella is "kicking ass". But I fail to see why.

Let's see positives. Today MS is posting lot of profits (which they did even under Steve Balmer). And yes there is lot of positive press (acquired Github, Minecraft, many AI companies, adopted Linux and SJW cause alignment).

But if you look at Azure despite being profitable there is not a single distinct feature which MS innovated. Everything is a catchup from AWS. Very ironically the previous maligned CEOs failed trying to do something new and bold.

I agree that office 365 is a great service and has massive potential but that's hardly Nadella's brain child.

So what is his legacy other than positive press and social causes? What product or service did he help create? (Ex: iwatch didn't exist under jobs, neither did face id).

He is not Steve Ballmer. That should be enough.

His biggest achievement is giving up Microsofts legacy of windows and the ego that came with it.

The market changed and most people want linux, cloud and open source. That's been signficant

That's not a CEO level achievement. TimCook cooked changes the way people use iPhone... under Nadella people stopped using Windows while he basks in the good press of Github acquisition

As the CEO of a public company, he doesn’t get evaluated on legacies, innovation or creation. He gets evaluated on increasing shareholder value (wealth) with the resources the board tells him he can have. And he’s delivered formidable results. The more nuanced point is, shareholder value is correlated heavily with the aggregate perception of the market of your company. He’s been able to take the image of a failing behemoth and turn it into the image of a growing company. This is no small achievement. If you want to understand why people think he’s a good CEO, I would start by re-evaluating your success criteria.

To actually answer your question OP Satya led the integration of great plains. He was wildly successful in STB. He has insanely more charisma than most engineers and an MBA from the top program, implying he understands something about business. Something you completely lack.

    1. Azure as a business overall is not profitable. Azure storage is the only cash cow at present.

    2. Satya’s achievement? Making quarterly layoffs a standard feature of the employee experience, and going overboard with projecting his political correctness on others due to his Grace Hoppper fuckup

Kemper, what are you smoking? Must be grade A crap.
There’s hate here for how far Satya is pushing and projecting his SJW bullshit for his personal failings on employees. Most people outside MSFT don’t know the kind of crap we are going through nowadays due to Satya and his leadership teams’ failings-
      1. Forced diversity metrics in hiring, promotions and rewards
      2. Insane levels of political correctness including in day to day interactions - a company shouldn’t decide what we talk/ how we talk with our friends or what we should/ should not do in our personal lives
      3. Crazy levels of hubris in how Azure is great while it’s a slapdash job
      4. No clear roadmap- everything is a knee jerk reaction to what AWS or GCP are doing
      5. Quarterly layoff cycles due to which people are more bothered about surviving into the next quarter than being productive in work - this is a different version of the stack ranking system that made MSFT toxic in the first place.

Layoffs are at Bu level or anyone? What’s criteria of layoffs? Have there been layoffs in team which is hiring?
      Nov 10, 2018
    • Microsoft / Consultant nutsy
      1. Across an entire BU, in this case across the company all the time.
      2. The criteria is never told to managers by HR - albeit there’s a chance that age may sometimes push you to the list as well
      3. Yes, all the time

OP, you are living under delusion. If there is one metric that a CEO is measured on, is stock price. His job is not to innovate. He can hire scientists for that. His job is to increase shareholder wealth. Period.

  • His achievement is he changed the perception of Microsoft in the tech world.
The arrogance of ballmer would have brought MSFT down to dust. He would still be pushing Lumia and claiming Linux was a disease and windows ecosystem was god sent.

Satya was Humble. He accepted the defeat . Cleared deadwood from mobile , windows and services and made msft more open and pushed towards cloud.

The move to cloud started way before Satya in Ballmer’s era- Ballmer actually approved the kickstart of this process with BobMu helming the show

It’s like saying Obama made good a failing economy - he rode the wave of good things that the Bush admin put in place before they went, but don’t let the minutiae bother you, please carry on with your ignorance.

He is pushing azure and msft is rank 2 so far. Lots of companies tried to get in cloud but they failed eg- Cisco, Vmware. There are questions raised on oracle /ibm’s cloud strategy. I would say getting second position is achievement. He is getting into AR space by developing halolens. Office, Msft windows are back to profitability as per last earnings report. He is using tax reparations for buyback. Overall he is navigating ship in right direction
