Hi I have a friend in microsoft who joined 9 months ago and his manager has asked him to look somewhere else in same BU a month back, but hv not given any official PIP or email about same. Now he is saying that look outside microsoft and he has 2 weeks for the same. I bel company like microsoft should have a proper PIP plan or pink slip process, which they shd communicate to the employee. Could some one from Microsoft enlighten me over the same?

No PIP process but firing people is hard and requires a lot of documentation

Iamletired - I just assume it’s a young buck that knows the world lol.

I guess he completely overlooked that all states are at-will anyways, so it’s a pretty arbitrary point to make. 😂

Litigious country is litigious. I really don't understand why you'd want to sue MSFT. If you're not performing, you're not performing. I'd rather resign and leave on my own terms, head held high, without burning bridges without using slimy lawyers to attempt to extract money for "unfair dismissal"

It has NOTHING to do with the underperforming individual and everything to do with MSFT HR policies. It is a long and involved process to manage somebody out. If you don't know What you're talking about, please keep your uninformed opinions to yourself. And in many instances, said individuals may actually have a case, which is why HR is so conservative.

kebab - didn’t say I support it. Just that’s what happens.

I agree with iam. There are justified circumstances where folks seek litigation, but some folks unfortunately understand it’s an option and manipulate the system.

Fair enough. It must be super stressful dealing with the pressure of being managed out. If I could see the writing on the wall, I think the adult thing to do is to resign before you're fired.

What happened then, what is the process for low performers?

It has to be careful documentation and feedback , if it still doesn’t improve , involving HR to work on next steps (not PIP - but based on circumstances it might end up being something similar to PIP). So pip is not normal - more like an exception if there is no improvement and the person is not leaving.

      It's a PIP in disguise

Thanks so basically HR will be involved in later part. According to him his manager said that you only have two weeks to find a new job outside of microsoft. I felt its weird that company like MS has no standard process for underperformers.

It seems weird the manager only said that verbally and didn’t put it in writing.

Yeah, I agree. But changing jobs on work permit takes time, and thats why he wants to understand the firing process.

The writing is on the wall for your friend and he should probably just leave. There's no point in fighting it.
