What will be the percentage cut?
NY TC: 350k USD. Toronto TC would be 200k CAD
1 CAD = 0.75 USD, so that 200K CAD is 150K USD, meaning a 57% reduction.
Wtf. Is this real ??
I'm afraid the truth is pretty bad, it's this what we are facing: Seattle Amazon SDE2 gross TC: 250k USD, total deductions 27%, leaving you net: 180k USD (240k CAD) Vancouver Amazon SDE2 gross TC: 175k CAD, total deductions 33%, leaving you net: 117k CAD (88k USD) So that means your income will drop by a whopping 53%. And the life ain't any cheaper in relative terms in Vancouver. Now imagine that a couple of Amazon SDE2s and SDE3s _collaborate_ with their colleagues in Seattle on a daily basis. I wonder when there will be a strike asking for at least reviewing this inequality for doing the same work in the SAME company ;) Vancouver salaries would need to be adjusted at least 40%+ to become comparable. So, stay where you are. Canada is only for retirees or entrepreneurs. Employment would be a stupid plan in Vancouver.
I recently moved from Seattle to Vancouver. The number dropped by around 15% and the amount after conversion dropped by around 33%. Things that are expensive here: house ownership, gas and car insurance. Rents here I feel are slightly cheaper than Seattle. If you pay 2k for a one bed room apartment in downtown Seattle, you’ll find good apartments for 2k CAD in downtown Vancouver. My monthly expenses were around 2k USD vs 2k CAD now. Taxes are definitely higher here. That affects your bonuses and stock awards. Not your base pay that much really. Opportunities here are fairly limited. So if you don’t like your current job, finding a new job will be difficult. Also the only companies I think that pay well here are amazon and Microsoft. So if you’re joining either of these two, then it may make sense to move. If not, it may not be.
Thanks all. It looks like Canada is worse than US in all aspects. What else country pay well?
If you really want to up your game in terms of compensation AND QoL I suggest you to consider the following in the order given: - Switzerland - Norway - Luxembourg - Denmark - Netherlands I can't recommend any other in Europe, but compensation wise you will be best off with either Switzerland or Norway. The Norwegian salary will be almost equal to US, but the high taxes there will eat it, so that you are worse off than moving to Switzerland with really high salaries, low taxes and cheap purchasing options in Austria, France, Germany or Italy.
Thanks, any comparison with Singapore, Japan and Australia?
Most of IT companies in Vancouver give miserable salary. But when you get married and if your kid doesn't like coding, your kid's situation would be even worse.
