  • BTW, What's so special about base salary? TC is what matters.

    • Wework is a tiny fraction of the workforce. For rest of us Base is anywhere between 30 to 100% of the TC.

IMO it matters a lot because there are so many large startups not just WeWork. They boost the total TC but that's just selling dream

maybe for SWE, also depends on stock vesting when people are job jumping every 2 years. In Business side, Sales, or Sales support base+bonus matters quite a bit.

42k is about normal here. And real estate is downright cheap if you aren't obsessed with new construction as many Japanese people are. It's possible to live on a lot less than you would need in NYC and SF.

The only negative thing is that I'm not capable of doing the jobs the people above me do, so I'm stuck at this level. I peaked early and my salary has only gone down in the past decade.

That's fantastic. Rakuten will pay you a munificent 3.6M to start and maybe 25% more than that two decades later, with more and more KPIs (OKRs) bearing down on you all the time.

Wish I worked somewhere else! ,😭

36/182k/West Michigan - I am not a SWE though, I work in Sales Support / Sales Engineering.

In a travel role it's pretty nice to live in a place where $350k-$500k gets you a 4500sqft home in a gated community with top tier schools. I enjoy NY/SF/LA/CHI when I travel that much more since I am not living in a large city. I can drive to Chicago in a couple hours for meetings or shows and be home same day.
