What kind of role could I target at these companies?

L6 TC 440. Edit - post cliff, at grant price. TLM at Google. 10 years pre Google experience, 6 years at Google. Great management feedback scores, and performance on technical ladder is holding steady at Exceeds Expectations. Tired of commute and promo driven development culture. Want to maintain current comp but not very interested in further growth. Want to work on interesting problems with interesting, nice people. I'm not an idealist, understand politics is everywhere, understand that both bottom up and top down planning can have drawbacks (and strengths). Been around the block. What kind of roles should I target at these companies (selected for optimal commute)? Thanks!

SWE, post cliff. I did not apply any Blind multiplier on my tc since I'm looking for serious advice

Blind multiplier?

Are you willing to accept lower TC?

Hmmm, depends. But only if the opportunity is really exciting.

Find a company doing something you find exciting. You make enough that you should have saved enough, and now can do what you love, even if it means a pay cut. You probably already know what the right move is... Blind shouldn't be anyone's first go to for serious career advice.

To afford to live closer to Mountain View? Hmm, that's one strategy I guess. Currently in a SFH in a good school district.

I am excited about work at Google (when I'm not dealing with perf overhead) and would ideally like to stay in the same general domain. Things are pretty good. The only areas for improvement are commute and wlb.

You are describing a problem that everyone has (commute and WLB). Consequently, there is no silver bullet here, just trade-offs. Wait for the housing market to crash and buy a condo closer to work. You can stay there when commute gets worse. Or switch to management track and use other people's sweat to justify your raises. Or wait for the full self driving car from Tesla:)

You should be able to come in at Director of engineering or higher at PayPal with that comp. there are lots of interesting problems to be solved and it’s a generally comfortable life where everyone understands work life balance
