What makes AirBnB such a coveted 🦄 for Software Engineers to work at ? . Is it just that they are biggest in their market or are there any other technology innovations going on that makes it interesting to work ? For eg: Uber has such a large scale and a real challenge for implementing distributed systems in a real-time scenario, also they open source a lot of their stuff What does Airbnb have? I know they have contributed quite a lot to react, is there anything else ?
It's full of white people
Would someone please give me a referral?
@Zero Cool, are you serious?
Their product idea is very good with a really strong engineering culture.
How come the Airbnb app sucks so badly? It doesn’t work in offline mode. I like the Airbnb concept idea but strong engineering culture is loosely defined. If you call solving leetcodes strong engineering culture, then I’d rather die.
This ^^
G/FB pay & genuinely good engineering teams
Somebody said white people. That has to be a plus.
Airflow is pretty cool
Some good reasons to work here: Top tier pay, solid wlb, amazing perks, amazing culture, fair amount of upside, decent reputation / prestige, beautiful office, high hiring bar, tons of smart people and everyone is really nice. We do also have some great open source stuff. Check out lottie and epoxy just to name a couple Every company has downsides Google: slow promos, political, lots of boring teams, harder to make an impact, lowball/down level like crazy Nflx: cut throat culture, not a lot of job security Facebook: hacky culture, bad wlb, recent media shit storm Uber: gross food, no 401k match, huge risk as they try to become profitable in the next few years, boring office, perks in general not that great and probably won't get much better since they will have to squeeze pretty hard for profitability. Also who knows what's gonna happen when self driving starts to take off. Amazon: lol Airbnb: we do have tech debt and it shows in our apps sometimes - there are huge efforts to fix this, infra is not as established as fb/g but that creates opportunity, had some less experienced managers in 2018 earlier but leadership is fixing that, not as high scale as fb/Uber but still have some great challenges Linkedin: old and shitty tools, not super high scale, product hasn't changed/innovated much in years, can be pretty political No company (or team/org for that matter) is ever perfect
Dropbox?
That’s the kind of answer I am looking for
Google slow promos and downlevels is sadly accurate I will say though that salary bands at each level are wide. They will low-ball but you can negotiate up quite a bit
I would recommend you to check out their eng blog https://airbnb.io/ to get an idea. They are still heavily a Ruby/React shop but things are changing, good time to join if you are interested scaling and SOA.
It’s a hotel site, just like amazon is a retail site, Uber is a taxi site, Facebook is a media site, and google is a search site
That’s not what I am asking
My point is if you dumb it down, of course it’s hard to see the value in it. If you say “Uber is just a taxi service” or “google is just a search website” then it’s easier to claim they’re not of any value
