I have read that what determines the success of a country is whether people have a sense of civic duty. When that exists you can have few laws and everything just works. Examples of countries with a high sense of civic duty would be Switzerland, or Japan. Crime rates are naturally low and you can actually go far on the honor system. Stuff just works and it makes everything efficient. In countries with a low sense of civic duty nothing works. Everyone rips off the system for their own benefit, levels of corruption are high, things just become inefficient. You can only get people to follow the rules by police enforcement, which is expensive, and falls to bribery. The US used to be a country with a high sense of civic duty, the famous "Protestant work ethic", which allowed for few rules and yet a high degree of collaboration. I think one worry about the immigration system is that it's selecting for the wrong people. We are bringing in people based on paper certifications and family connections rather than somehow evaluating their commitment to the country and to their fellow citizens.
Law N order
“their commitment to the country and to their fellow citizens”, and yet plenty of America-born citizens don’t have that. I believe in individual success.
Yeah, we might have let in some of the wrong people already
Koala said American-born citizens. They weren't let in. Or are you suggesting infanticide?
Only admit immigrants who can crack word ladder ii!
Lol.. only leet code hard
Legal immigrants are naturally vetted through a competitive albeit arbitrary process so I don’t think you need to worry too much. The problem is when illegal immigrants pour in through the borders (without a similar vetting process, naturally), and the nation’s leaders are politically motivated to grant them amnesty. Then we have a problem.
Amnesty is a terrible policy and has been done on both sides of the aisle. It’s what happens when you realize you are losing a war and give up by making a settlement offer during surrender
Legal employment immigration is broken. It's based on country of birth, which doesn't qualify you doing a job. There is nothing competitive about choosing people because they were born in country X, even though you vet them for their skill to do the job.
Immigration I think has more to deal with fertility replacement rates (immigrants generally have more children than developed countries), also GDP per capital is crucial in the wealth generation of nations
That's the why, but we can be picky about the who.
Do you think there are inherent differences of human beings based on the geo coordinates of where they’re born? I mean do you believe some experiences or people are “better” than others? What are you trying to communicate?
The height of THE WALL decides the success criteria
White people - all countries with them are termed successful
Ukraine?
Yeah Eastern Europe has problems so this isn't a genetic thing. Western Europe has a strong sense of civic duty. So does Japan to give a non white example, and Greece would be an example of a Western European country that is just doing everything wrong in this regard.
A good country is a country that leetcodes only at hard.
The main factor of stable society and "sense of duty" is belief in the system. The confidence that everyone plays by the same rules and the cheaters get punished. In this aspect America is rotting from within: openly corrupt decisions at the top, pampering of one group of people over the other. Immigration is actually not a leading factor (the flow should be determined by the rate of assimilation) - they just learn what works around here.
Depends what you are comparing to, I think the US certainly is not as strong in this regard as it was fifty years ago but it's still much better than many countries are.
Over time we see more and more cases of rules being broken (most recent and blatant example of Jussie Smolett). It is possible to revert that by similarly public cases where the system works as it should. However, everything is political nowadays, so we need people with brass.

Myths and abstractions. When did the US have a “Puritan work ethic”? When slave-masters worked hard at cracking whips and therefore didn’t need police? Or after slavery in the era of Tammany Hall?
