I'm a mid-level designer but my Sr. has pulled me aside a couple of times telling me: - he doesn't like being challenged so much by me (I'm asking questions because I thought my job was to understand the problems and help find the solutions to them) - that I'm just a Jr. (I'm not) - that I can get my ideas heard, by him, but he'll steal them and show them to people individually without me present (but I see you, dude) - and obviously does not trust me handling a project or even a small product feature These are just a couple of things. I honestly don't know what I'm still doing here. Manager is buddy-buddy with Sr. and when I've tried to bring the Jr. thing to his attention it's just brushed off. Sr.'s personality is a joke in the office. Hesitant to talk and bring up more since my manager doesn't even schedule 1:1's with me like with others on my team, as I'm supposed to be under Sr. Never really experienced this kind of thing anywhere else, even as a contractor, and I'm just baffled. How do people in the U.S. deal with this?
This is just awful. It’s sad to see leadership that is this petty. If you have the opportunity try to move to a better place.
So far my experience with U.S. companies... are having to deal with a lot of petty shit and tons of office politics. Even at a small startup. I just want to do good work and build amazing products.
Office politics isn’t necessarily a negative thing. As designers we need to navigate through different teams and their priorities to get our designs reviewed. But what you are going through is BS. NYC job market is competitive but not impossible. Reach out to recruiters and start your search. Good luck!
C players! Never work for anyone other than A players. It hurts your career.
Just leave - you’re damaging your career by being there and being a yesman.
Would love to go elsewhere and find right team, and company.
You work with total losers. Where are you located and can you share your portfolio?
Based in NYC. I can share if you want to connect outside of blind.
Just FYI, I've only been at company for a few months. I've started looking elsewhere but do want to speed up the process. What do I even say to recruiters as to why I'm looking to move on? I feel anxious coming into work every day. Best of luck to me on another beautiful day in utter crap!
Just say your current project will be wrapping up soon, and this is a great time to try something new. Harmless, and it implies you think about the business first.
That's a good advice - thanks!
QUIT. If possible, assuming you don’t need H1B, give them a YUGE middle finger when you leave!
Hahaha, if by the end of this I won't care for their relationship, I'll consider. And no I don't need a H1B!
