We just changed the tiles in our bathroom. We thought that no permit is needed and our contractor didn't mention it either. Then we heard from another contractor that changing the tiles in the bathroom might require a permit. We don't know who to believe, and couldn't find much information on the website. What are we supposed to do now? The 2nd contractor is doing our kitchen remodel (w a permit). An inspector will come over and inspect his work. Will he notice the new tiles in the bathroom? Location is a condo in San Francisco
I think you got bs-ed. Either that or sf really wants your money that bad. Either ways I’ve seen tons of houses with modifications without permit. As long as it’s inside your own house and doesn’t affect plumbing or electric no one gives a fk.
It is in gray area. It is up to you. But some permits are really easy to get like submitting a request thru the city website.
Nothings going to happen, u dunt need to tell anyone that u replaced the tiles. The tiles were already there when u bought it.
The second contractor probably wanted to charge you to redo it. You might want to get rid of him.
You need a permit. But if you finished the job already, just let it be.
You need a permit so when the neighbors complain about noise in the day time. You can show them your permit. Otherwise, they could report you for remodeling without a permit.
Yes we finished it already, no neighbor complained about anything. But will it have legal consequences later? We didn't do it intentionally, just didn't know. We don't want anything in the future like, cannot sell the condo or pay a hefty fine
So, there could be two situations. IF the tile replacement is benign, as in, no potential contact with plumbing, then you shouldn't need a permit. Additionally, even if you are going to come in contact with plumbing just have a plumber come in and shut off the water to that bathroom for you if you're really worried. Honestly, the city would never know. Most contractors just want a permit to cover their own a**es.
Yeah what we worried about is that we are doing kitchen renovation (w permit), so an inspector is going to come in and look. Will he notice that the bathroom has new tiles?
Put the tiles back
