What would you optimize for in my situation?
I feel I am facing mid-age crisis. I am a father of two young kids, 2.5 and 4.5, and doing OK in my career, recently promoted to senior engineering manager. Financially not doing well, only about 1M total asset (considering my age 30+ and a family of 4). Sometimes I am Not sure what to do next? Emotionally lost!
Why only 1m
TC?
1M is pretty good right? 4% returns and you can take nearly any job you want out of interest to get a little extra $$ and then live simply.

What do you mean financially not doing well and 1M in assets.
Considering my age and with a family of 4. If I were in my 20s with 1M asset, I would be happy enough.
1M asset in 20s! Ha. Very few in 20s have assets of a million.

Guys, I have two kids, and I am not a kid out of college for just a few years. I know guys who did well in Leetcode and investment can cumulate 1m asset pretty quickly in their 20s.
This is pretty rare. The only people that might have done is that they hit the jack pot, maybe a IPO gone right etc.
We have to all stop comparing to young grads. They were lucky to be in the job market at the right time. Invest time to grow your TC be it leetcoding or what ever it takes or we have to make peace with it.
Have you talked to other people of your age who live paycheck to paycheck? You got young kids - it's the best time of your life! Keep showing up at work and bringing home the paycheck.
This is what I am doing now, coasting and getting paid. And that’s also why I feel lost.
You’ve just identified the real problem here OP. You don’t feel like you’re doing impactful work and that has a huge effect on quality of life and personal self esteem. It means you’re too ambitious to just sit back and collect a paycheck. Start Leetcoding, move up to a Tier 1, and you’ll be overall more energetic, happier, and ultimately a better parent as well.
