What's going on at Groupon?

For being the fastest growing company in history (according to some tech journalist) it seems like right now they are in very bad shape.

I overheard some guys yesterday in a bar that there are strong rumors of a lay offs in engineering, they are moving tons of dev jobs to India, they don't have a proper office in the Bay Area (everyone is wfh) and everyone hates their CTO.

One of the guys actually suggested that they are on life support until they find someone to buy them up.

Any insiders want to comment?

When was the last time you or anyone you know bought something on Groupon?

Layoffs and moving jobs already happened. No office is just a delay in office move. People do hate the CTO. those people are being overdramatic about life support but it's definitely a pretty low point and timing of everything is pretty bad

CTO is ruining the company and the culture. His CoS is even worse. 3 lay-off rounds in the last 2 months, engineering going to India. Classic cuts to make the company look good on paper as an acquisition target.

I used Groupon a lot a few years ago. Now I never use it because it seems like nothing new has been offered in the last few years and the deals have gotten more scarce. Looks like they’ve focused a lot on the Groupon Goods, which are drop-shipped and take 100 years to arrive at your home and you pay for shipping? Nah, sorry Groupon.

  • It’s a low tech company to begin with. They should’ve taken the google offer.

Life support is over the top. We have been profitable for the past several quarters. Lots of complaining on here about CTO but I haven’t heard anything at work. It isn’t like I deal with him day to day so can’t really say. Office changes kind of make sense. I mean the HQ are in Chicago with a huge office underutilized and plenty of tech workers to fill roles in Chicago. I mean we are a 2-3 billion company why do we need offices in SF, PA, Seattle and Chicago???

    • Because Groupon once thought they worth 10B+?

Yeah exactly. Even a 10B organization doesn’t need that many offices for devs so reorganizing and moving many of the positions to HQ makes sense. It isn’t like most of the positions are being eliminated just moved.

Every company will have its highs and lows. It’s all about weathering the storm. I’m sure Uber can attest to that.

No real moat. Business model not viable since it needs businesses to subsidize products and services.

Groupon is a zombie company. Also fastest growing companies (to become unicorns at least) have been Bird/Lime by far I think
