Recruiter from C1 hit me up, wondering how people there like it. I'm an L4 at Uber and I'm open to looking outside. They seem to have cool projects (Alexa, Eno, and the cafes).

What's the culture like and how's the SF locations? Is the work as interesting as it seems on the outside?

Obligatory: 260k TC, 3 YOE.

I am on my way out of Capital One actually. Some reasons why:

    1. Company has no respect for SF office. the CEO refuses to visit us and there is virtually no leadership in this building. The VP in charge of SF was fired a few months ago and then they tried to tell us that she had planned to leave for several months... Yeah right then why did they have a meeting last minute?
    2. Constant restructuring, in the last 12 months I think two large orgs were disbanded and most of the employees laid off. Halo, Small Business, all gone and their projects all got taken to East Coast.
    3. Low quality code base, really bad coders who just cargo cult and make the problems worst because they don't care to be responsible
    4. You're an Eng right? Uber is monopoly money but C1 doesn't do equity grants until you're a Director so your TC will be even lower than it is now
    5. I heard Uber got rid of stack ranking, well... bad news. CEO loves it and thinks it's the best system. Many of my good friends and quality talent leave because of it.
    6. Performance management is about marketing yourself as a 1000x rockstar developers instead of any quality output, so forget about anything but politics. Seeing you are from Uber... It might be a good fit?
    7. Last week someone in my org sent a farewell email calling out the CEO for never visiting... and our VP who is also never visiting decided to fire him and have security remove him from the building for it.

My advice... just don't do it.

Actually, it was 4 days until the guy’s last day. The email included stuff like “FIGHT THE POWER”, statements about how compensation at Capital One compared to that of other companies, criticism of lack of diversity at the office (which there is just no substance to), and complaints about the CEO not visiting — it was mean-spirited.

They ask for feedback every week but if you give them one you're escorted out by the security. Agree with everything said above. Run from this as fast as you can :)

Don't do Capital One. They cannot match TC unless Director+ level. Also, for above reasons, definitely don't go to C1 in SF

I 💯% agree with @KNBRIAF's assessment. Pretty spot on. Let me add the following context

    1. Middle management here is very mediocre. In fact middle and senior leadership has zero clue of how to build things or truly engineer anything for that matter.
    2. Because of #1 above, it's all talk and talk culture. The people who rise are those who can shout the loudest and promote themselves, without any substance. Just build the next shitty stuff, and market it hard. No one will use it anyway.
    3. There is forced stack ranking, and number #2 above is what keeps people afloat.
    3. The company tries to sell itself with the renovated cafes, fake Glassdoor ratings, etc but it's all smokescreen. It's not a tech company by any imagination
    4. I've been here a while and was quite excited when I first joined, like many new employees. However, reality quickly dawned on me, and the real culture has left me jaded. Every good talent I know leave asap

I'm in the East coast, and it's bad here as well

I’m at C1 now. East coast. C1 is trying hard to be a software company. We need more good talent to help fight the bureaucracy. If they can match your comp and you find a good place where you can make an impact and help the company grow then it’s an ok place.

They do stack ranking / forced ranking. That means they lay off 10% every year. It creates a lot of toxic relationships and behavior. Its smarter on your part if you run away screaming 'fuck no!' at the recruiters. They're the front wheels on the bus they throw people under later.

It is a forced stack ranking, but I didn't see layoffs in my team or around

People are not necessarily laid off immediately after a forced ranking. You get put on coaching plan and performance improvement plan. I think it's after 2 consecutive forced ranking, that leads to termination

Work-life balance is excellent and people do good work here. Things can be a little slow but that is to be expected at a regulated company.

You will not reach your TC goal.

Some of the people who left recently seemed to have had fairly extreme expectations about company culture, either expecting something closer to their startup experience (not realistic in this setting) or seeing the firm as a tool to accomplish goals related to diversity and inclusion (and partying because, hey, diversity means party!). Pride was a massive multi-day party. Then a bunch of people left. The rainbows have been up ever since.

Work life balance is excellent? You're kidding right? This is by far the worst company as far as work life balance goes. East coast mentality no flexibility and emphasis on attendance vs output.

If you’re on a PIP you’re pretty much out the door. It’s done more and more. And no East Coast isn’t better. I’ve seen so many good folks be redeployed or given PIPs after years of great work. The stack ranking was also altered last year in that they take a harder look at “strong”. They’re trying to really throw more folks into “inconsistent” to drum them out.

Bottom line is they will never be able to match your ask. The offer will likely be around 170k TC. Culture varies by team and could be pretty good to horrible. It’s above par compared to most other banks.

Agree with most points. Personally love C1 as a company to work for but lousy leadership from direct leader (director) is very top down, pushy, with no real creative thoughts of his own. It’s all about perception upwards for him, not really about building something great. Also hate the force ranking and bottom rated coaching plan requirements. These 2 things ruin team culture.

First hand experience from someone who worked in middle management. Very unstable & mediocre top leadership. Lacks focus - and they always go for next shiny object. I recently left the company after they closed down a division. Avoid if you can. They tout themselves as a west coast tech company - not even close!
