What's so toxic about cruise?

I've heard it on Blind and through friends, but what makes it so toxic? Why does everyone say that the company is terrible? Would you never consider moving there? Should I not?

My experience at Cruise was bad too. I have been thr for almost a year. Hardly any focus from the management and leadership on employee welfare and growth. They just extract work and let you burnout. The only hope is the Tech VP called Mo, most of the leaders under him are immature old timers with very little people management or strategic experience. Only recently few good experienced directors and EMs where hired from companies like Facebook, but still the CTO /founder and his loyal blindly supporting Old Gang has strong influence on all the decisions

It’s great that you are liking Cruise, @trak (I mean that sincerely). This is definitely NOT my personal experience or those of my colleagues— we are burnt out, stressed out, and leaving the company in mass. I’m not sure dismissing the concerns regarding company culture as merely the voice of a few bitter ex-employees is helpful, nor do I think it is objectively true. One can also make the same argument that the vehement counter-arguments to any criticism of Cruise seen on Blind can be attributed to a very few handful of Cruisers who are also posting the same posts over and over again. Maybe we should all talk to each other more in person across different teams and departments at Cruise— we will learn much more about experiences that are different than our own.

We are living in world where TC matters considering high cost of living. Many can deal with toxicity for higher TC.

At Cruise RSU refreshers are hard to get. No bonus multiplier. Base salary raise are okies. Long term that affects TC.

Hence ppl who cares about TC are leaving.

There are a good many companies that _don't_ offer refreshers or multipliers. I know people in FAANG that don't have refreshers and are facing a looming cliff. You see it on Blind, too.

It's silly to single Cruise's compensation structure out as the "reason people who care about TC are leaving". Everyone poops.

    • Cruise Automation prcption
"Ppl who cares about TC" left == they were not happy with our compensation structure

I don't see anything wrong with above argument. There might be ppl who leave due to other reasons, but I am talking purely about ppl who left because they were not happy with TC.

@hqudy651 Almost everyone at FB/Goog/LinkedIn gets a refresh.

      Netflix doesn't give an RSUs.
      About Apple - I don't know.

hqudy651> I know people in FAANG that don't have refreshers.
      :o
Please let them know they are being signaled to leave.

I’ve personally heard no work life balance, high turn over, and organizational discord, but that’s all second hand information.

Interesting. Ex tesla people folks working there mention that work life balance is way better. Looks like the bar is already really low for them

Depends on the team, but in general what you heard is true re: bad work life balance, extremely high turn over rate (esp at management level), and general organizational chaos. Also lack of transparency on the leadership team.

This guy, as you can tell by his website name, isn’t exactly a fan of the industry. He scoured public Blind posts for toxic employees and wrote an article about it. That article spread and somehow became truth.

You could write the same article about every single employee by searching the employer name on Blind and finding the bad.

Don't know much about the work. But in the last 1 month I have had 5 recruiters connect with me and then not follow up. It seems a bit disorganized. I assume growing rapidly comes with that.

Its not in my experience and I feel there are a few pissed people on blind giving us a bad rep . My experience has been great and I've been able to grow a lot in a short time

My observation about the company is that for its relatively small size it is infested with politics more than any other place I've seen. By politics, I mean that people tend to favor solutions based on affiliation rather than based on merit. The culture seems to borrow the bad traits from the likes of Amazon and FB: stack ranking, forced attrition, and worse of all severe stress. Everybody seems to be over-worked and stressed out. This is not just in my team but in other teams as well. Finally, the company is very homogeneous in terms of its engineers, with a high percentage of Asian males. Some people may enjoy working in this type of environment, I personally find it overwhelming.

have been with Cruise for almost a year. Mostly bad experience. Now it's even getting worse with stack ranking.
The company has decided to go with churn and burn.
Interviewing is getting easier. I've on so many hiring committees that the hiring managers begged for giving candidates few more tries even they were clear rejects.

    • Cruise Automation hqudy651
180k with a 20 hour week? Stay where you are for another year or two, then negotiate for the ability to work remotely full time. Move to a cheaper state or overseas; or hell, travel the world. 180k is more than enough to live comfortably on.

I'm fairly new, but from what I can tell...

We have our problems like anyone else - some team splintering and weird organizational structuring, but by and large I've met people I would describe as healthy, happy, intelligent, and good. In my < 1mo I haven't yet noticed WLB issues in my team, and my org's management, while not perfect, is well intentioned and seems to be fairly in agreement with each other.
