All I'm getting from the recruiter is that they use RoR. Are there any technical challenges? What do Flexport engineers work on, on a day by day basis?
trash
Lol what tech? 😂
They called me too, I heard ror and that all their directors were grown from within and just wasn't interested
Similar to stripe/blend/plaid, very old industry that’s business logic heavy
We are RoR. Some people like it, some people despise it. Our directors so far have been home grown (this is all likely to change soon if u simply track hiring rates). We are looking for engineers who enjoy understanding real world business problems and who enjoy building simple, flexible and reliable products with the right amount of abstractions. I’m not gonna lie - there is a significantly nonzero amount of tech debt, but we are making steady, determined progress. In the immediate future, we are less focused on ML, big data, data science, algorithms. We are more focused on digitization and automation. Haters stay away. If you are intrigued, apply! We are a wartime company with every intent on winning.
The decision was made way before my time, but imho, it was easier to find people who could build stuff quickly with RoR back then, and there were enough libraries. Don’t know if it helps, but this topic is often debated internally.
This is my understanding as well.
Nothing wrong with using something like RoR to iterate fast at the beginning. But Flexport not evolving their tech stack given the stage they are at is a very bad sign. It’s too far from a tech company.
Is the hate for Ruby or RoR? The vast majority of code I write is generally agnostic of Rails, fwiw.
It's hatred of both
The bigger issue is that Flexport doesn’t evolve its technology.
Probably route optimization models and automating manual paperwork processes
