Received a verbal offer today. I was ready for the recruiter to ask me about my expected comp but she said nothing. When we discussed timeline I told her I have a pending offer from another company and she was so nonchalant about that as well, which was kind of surprising. After reading a couple posts here I saw someone mentioned the fair compensation program that Uber just implemented. Can any existing employees explain how does that work? Does it also mean there would be no negotiation whatsoever after getting the numbers from the recruiter? Please lemme know so I can prep myself until then. Thank you!
What level though
I was told Uber usually do not negotiate on base and stock since a few months ago. Maybe a sign on if they really want you.
Being lazy to search, would be curious to see if they are still rolling competitive offers when you get your numbers
I was able to negotiate my equity offer at L4.
Did you have a competing offer or any tricks? :)
No competing offer, they told me that the compensation department usually doesn't negotiate, but in the end they actually increased my RSU by quite a bit. Maybe was just lucky, maybe they really wanted me.
The new policy is comp for role ( level, job profile and location) rather than for individual. They want to keep it similar/consistent for the role and level - so that everyone doing similar work gets compensated similarly. Obviously if you have unique skill sets/ critical team or project need - you will get a little deviation from normal, but it’s supposed to be little, not too much. Uber is trying hard to get out of the whole negotiation game and treat everyone ( people great at negotiating and those who are not) fairly.
Does it aim to improve the average salary stats or to keep them the same?
I approve the message from Goody above. You have room to negotiate but not by much. So if you have really great offer that we know we cannot match we will just say that.
Did you get offer details?
Everything is negotiable. If you're polite about what you're worth and not rude to the recruiter, they won't rescind. Don't forget that you can try to negotiate level too. I was brought in as an L3 and didn't even think to try to negotiate level, but I was leveled up after a few months. This is very rare, but it increased my base significantly.
The backstory here is they are trying to wipe out gender and racial pay gaps. We were actually sued for this. So now there's a pretty strict system of what they are going to offer for a role + level (partially managed by an external company). They pretty much plug in and get a range for the role and that's that. So everybody's pay is much more equal but the outliers don't maneuver into huge paydays. What you might consider is trying to negotiate up a level.
Level and Offer details please?
Please read the post before commenting. No numbers just yet.
