I thought scientifically, it's easier to read things with white background

For people who use text editors and IDEs, jumping from a full screen dark background to a light one is pretty jarring.

Saves battery in (AM)OLED displays. Dark mode is potentially healthier on eyes and looks better.

If you stare at a screen for too many hours a day it can hurt your eyes.

Also dark mode just looks cooler.

It's just soothing to eyes. My IDE, terminal and Reddit are all dark themed, can't imagine white background for them

I think it's because it's white background in an active display, so the amount of light exceeds ambient light and eyes have to do efforts to go from one to the other. But I'm no expert.

My eyes don't get tired even after many hours of coding with dark background unlike with white. I actually use complete black wherever I can. It surely has to do with the amount of light emitted. Even on my phone I keep the brightness to less than half.

Anyone with an iPhone and likes dark mode should go to settings and enable smart invert (general > accessibility > display accommodations). Then go to general > accessibility > accessibility shortcut (scroll all the way down) and choose smart invert.

White backgrounds are especially useful when youโ€™re outside in the sun. Itโ€™s easy to read when there is enough contrast between the font and the background (like white and black)

It's just the default and may work better for night owls. I switch to light mode immediately.

We offer dark mode on our Restaurants app because restaurants are often dark and ambient, and it keeps the screen from looking like a big lightbulb.
