What's your total household income and after you happy with it?

200k for me and it seems not enough to be able to buy a house. Need to increase it to around 500k to realistically look for a house.

450K: It’s the bare minimum for a family in bay area.

Whoever thinks 450k is the min is over leveraged in a home, has 2 luxury cars, kids go to 40k per year private school, members of the local smug tennis club, and probably just blow money out their ass on stupid shit while trying to retire at 40, and then claims they’re barely getting by.

      Ignore all of them.

450k .. is fine anywhere.. what’s so special about Bay Area? Control your snobbery..
      Nov 25, 2017
    • $300k Single income and we're just fine in the South Bay as a family of 4. Yes my car is 11 years old but it handles my 25-40 minute commute. I put away enough that around $250k would be the minimum.

I'll always be $150k behind. When I made $100k 15 years ago, I was told $250k was needed to survive here. Now it's $450k apparently.

Just about $300k, for a dual income household- 1 kid and we’re doing just fine here in Mountain View. We only have one car that is new (under 20k), and a pretty nice little 2br 1ba condo in a good area with a fixed rent.

Lol at household income here. Going by the TC offers on other threads it should be north of 700K :-)

170k for me and I support 4 people on this salary in Seattle. I’m paraphrasing this and these are not my own words, but I learned a long time ago that no matter how much money you have, it will never be enough. If you’re looking for more of anything, you’ll never find it. Stop looking and you’ll see.

~600k (single income) for a family of 4. Gave up on buying a house. At this point I am more interested in the work I am doing.

You should check the Santa Clara and San Mateo county average homes price historical data. Barely dipped (some areas even still grew) back in 2008.

You all need to learn how to budget.
~200 after comps and ex-wife deduction, 3 kids, own a mortgage in the South Bay. Yes, I have a long commute and my kids are in public schools, but we are comfortable.
It’s not easy, but we are good.

I have a nanny, a damn good one. Took a lot of work to find her too. Just taking into account the commute (~45 min - 1 hr with traffic) the proximity to major work hubs drastically reduces home price. Granted, I bought at a good time. As far as budget goes, I cook for us, I Costco the shit out of things. Drive a reasonable car. Being a semi-single parent cuts back on the going out and partying aspect of things.
Short answer, I can’t imagine having even +100k on top of what I already make and not feel 100% secure with my finances.

  • We are at about $350k TC per year and have a comfortable house in the South Bay and feel pretty lucky about where we are. We don’t worry about money and feel that we have enough to do whatever we desire.

$200k, just bought a house in SF (3 bed, 2 bath). Lived in a studio for years before that and was rent controlled, so able to save large down payment. Single income...it's doable!

$350k - $400k per year and thankful everyday to be where we are. I started with $12 an hour out of college and would never think that I can be at where we are today. Having gone through 2 recessions also help us in our financial planning and understand that these also can be gone in a blink of an eye if we are not careful.

About 340k between L7 Amazon and my wife’s part time healthcare job. Two kids. Things are great right now in the Seattle area. Income has grown quickly in the last couple years. I’m doing everything to not increase our standard of living at the same rate. We will likely need to buy a new house in the next couple years and will probably spend about 1M. Not looking forward to that.

We're at 260k - dual income. It's not about how much you make but rather, how well you budget. We own 2 places in sf - extremely thankful for that as it was a big goal of ours. Bc now that we have a bigger place to live in, we can work on our next goal of having kids in our 3br while keeping the 1br as investment.
So it depends on what your goals are and budgeting well to meet them

250 TC, dual income, 1 kid. Own house now valued at $1M in Seattle. Super blessed but will likely have to choose public schools for kid, pvt too expensive.. Making ends meet in pvt school will be hard..
