When and how will DC tech take-off?

I don’t want to move. There are many things I like about this city, but I’m torn because it’s career suicide to stay here. Hoping that if Amazon or Apple open HQ2 we would get a new influx of talent and better contend. Then again, that could be years from now. Also do you think starting a successful startup here is feasible? Will need to pursue that dream in a year or two. Ps. I’ve reached out to Blind to add a DC section to the list of topics, like the existing NY or Chicago ones.

When people stop fighting over the same pot of money from the government and build products for people. Believe me, I wish it would happen soon, the salary to col ratio has to be one of the worst in the country and we need a healthy dose of competition to push that in the right direction.

Never

Why not?

Because pretty much the whole industry around DC depends on Uncle Sam's defense funding. It's like a huge work union.

The benefits are terrible compared to most modern tech companies and the salaries are meh as well. About 110k for a very high performing person with 6 years exp with a cap of around 150k if you can even get that position. Most people are probably around 90k in DC with 6 years exp, no bonus, no stock obviously. You're right though, with two earners you're still doing better than most in the country and you don't have to work very hard.

Yup agreed! I’m at $95k (including bonus) with 2+ years experience. Friend at FANG with 4 years experience makes $185k with RSU. If I can’t make $120k+ by 4th year I’m moving or focusing on creating a startup

Yea I'm about 110k at a little under 4 years, but have some offers coming in for around 130k and maybe some equity. I think if you're fine with the renting lifestyle you can bankroll way more with FANG or you can live that coveted East coast suburban dream and mortgage your life for 30 years.
