When interviewing with a company the recruiter may ask about current salary and future salary expectations. Has it ever happened that you were asked to show proof of current salary, like a copy of pay-stub or something? And if they ask, can you refuse? And how can they check if what you’ve provided is authentic?
This is about to become illegal in California in January 2018. Currently they are allowed to ask and they will seek proof. It's a tactic to find out how much they should offer. It's bullshit.
Of course you can refuse. I never provide my current comp because it’s not relevant. They have the job, they decide the value that job has. What I currently make is irrelevant. It’s always fun to ask them “why do you need my current comp? That doesn’t make any sense.”
Sure, you can refuse. But they can also refuse to continue the interview process unless you tell. Or at least the recruiter can threaten with a smile that "well this is standard and we won't be able to continue with the interview process until we know."
What’s wrong with that? Companies can decide to lose great candidates for many stupid reasons. I’ve been told that and said, “no problem, see yah”. Never had one yet actually follow through on it when I called their bluff. Happy to provide a copy of my past W-2 on my start date if they really need it.
I don't talk about my comp but at some point you need to give a range because you might be wasting your time. Gotta make sure what you want is in the range of what they'll offer
I heard from a HR director that companies can find out the taxes you paid in the past from a detailed background check. They can then work backwards to figure out what you've been paid. Not sure how true that use
What if you are paying taxes together with your partner?
She didn't elaborate too much, but if it is possible I'm assuming they may look at your w-9. Not sure though
Yes.
Yes. One time i offered to show my competing offer with confidential info blacked out, and they quickly backed out. Probably some legal liability issue that they want to avoid.
